MP makes profile name from part between 'hid.' and '.xml'. That mens it takes all files with this pattern: 'hid.*.xml'.
If you place your file in 'InputDeviceMappings' folder (ProgramData folder), then you should see in MP config -> Remote -> HID -> Profile selection list your file as 'full.user'. After selecting the profile and pressing OK, the MP xml file should have entry:
    <entry name="HidProfile">full.user</entry>

What about the directory? As you say, "hid.full.user*.xml" gets created under %ProgramData%, but "hid.full.xml" is under %ProgramFiles%.

The problem seems to be that updating the "Mappings" in MP config creates the necessary "hid.full.user*.xml" file but fails to update "MediaPortal.xml" to point to it. I have now substituted the "hid.full.user.xml" file from my old installation for the default "hid.full.xml" file under %ProgramFiles% and everything now works as I wish.

MP Config loads profiles from both 'InputDeviceMappings' folders: default(MP exe folder) and custom(ProgramData).
If you modify default profile, then 'user' suffix is added and the profile is saved into custom folder.
The combobox profile list shoud be reloaded. You have to select the desired profile and press OK to save & close Config.

Thanks for explaining. I found a passing reference to this here:
which I had overlooked in the past. I would find it logical for a created custom profile to be automatically activated, but until that happens, I will try to create a wiki page for the current system, instead of referring to old "What's New" pages. Many thanks for all your help and for all of your efforts on behalf of MP!.
