I've tried a few things that have made life somewhat better since I last posted. Updated DirectX and that did help somewhat. Changed processor from 1.4Ghz Celeron M to 1.86 Pentium M - SO much better, mostly in noise terms. The Pentium M seems to have an extra temperature sensor that makes the screaming little fan in my little media box shut up nicely. £15 well spent.

Turns out the Intel 915 graphics chip should be DirectX 9 compliant, just in a very non-powerful way. The new chip is faster enough that the box is quick and quiet enough now.

I haven't updated Media player to 11 (it's still version 9 from when I clean-installed Windows.) Isn't Media Player 11 a bit of a resource hog? (I'm only using the older Media Portal version (0.2.3 I think). I tried the brand new one with Media Player 11 first of all and it was even slower. Haven't tried it again since I got the new processor.

Downloaded the Blackmyst skin - will give it a go tonight :)

I solved my problems yesterday.

I gave up in the end out of frustration. So i just reinstalled a fresh
xp pro with service pack 3
.net 2
directx 9 with august updates
ffdshow
mediaportal 1.0 rc4
reclock ( i like to use this)

And all is well again.

And my in movie cpu usage has gone down from between 50% - 80% to 20 - 40%. I Wish I knew what I had installed that killed my pc like that.

But i(and even more my wife) is just so happy that things are working smooth again.
