Trying to get MP 1 going on the older ASUS DigiMatrix which uses SIS 651 graphics. I managed to get MP running with the latest drivers from SIS website however as soon as MP is launched CPU sits at 90% w/o any kind of navigation through the menus. Surprisingly overall performance is not bad, if not the high CPU usage. Is there anything that can be done to address this issue? Thanks.

Bottleneck is probably SIS 651. As MP is DirectX application it is constantly rendering the screen content, even when it is idle.

Will I see any improvement by going to an older MP version, like 0.2.x?

It turns out that 0.2.3.0 is indeed less demanding. I find it unfortunate that the latest MP is so picky about graphics, there is a lot of dirt cheap hardware that can play non-HD content (which I'm sure is still fine with most ppl), but not to run MP.
