Hi guys, I'm not new to Media Portal, just don't post much, can anyone here put me in the direction where I can watch a live tv channel from the Media Portal TV Server, over a wireless and wired network? Basically streaming. Can Media portal do that. I have VLC player installed on the computer where I want to live stream the channel (s) on. If so how do I get this to work?

    Hi Shadowless

There are several ways of getting streaming working. For a PC, the best approach is probably to install MP with the "client-only" option on that PC and point MP to your existing TV Server. That will allow you to use the complete functionality of MP on that computer without a second TV Server.

If you're just wanting to do a quick test then VLC will work:
    1. Start timeshifting or recording the channel that you want to view in MediaPortal on the server. You have to do this because VLC is not able to tell MP to start streaming a channel.
    2. Open TV Server configuration.
    3. Go to the "streaming server" section and note what is in the "stream" column.
    4. Open VLC on the other PC.
    5. Select file -> open URL.
    6. Enter rtsp://<host name or IP address of TV Server>:554/<stream column entry>. Example: rtsp://myTvServerName:554/stream2.0.
    7. Click play.

Of course you need to make sure that firewalls don't prevent VLC from accessing the network.

Ah nice :) Thanks very much. With the stream column entry in step 6 do I need to put the channel frequency or Stream 2.0 in there? That's the bit that has me confused?

"stream2.0" as per my example in step 6. To reiterate what I said before: you can't use VLC to start viewing any old channel. You can only connect to active streams that were started by viewing or recording TV in MediaPortal. The channel associated with stream2.0 could change. The 2 is just a number. It has no connection to any specific channels. If you really want to view TV on another PC then I recommend that you install MP on that PC. That is known as a multi-seat setup - multiple PCs connected to one TV Server.

Oh nice. I really only want to stream one channel over the network anyway. So it just takes on the channel that I put on time shift, correct? :)

Will use it this way and see how it goes. I will give the Media Portal set up on the computer that I am streaming it too a go at another time. I am just impressed that it can be done. Something I really didn't look at before until now. :)

    Thanks for your help. :)

Sweet. Simple but so effective. :) I reckon it will be much better to stream once I get MediaPortal installed as a client on the machine I'm testing on. :)
