Thanks valdi and rlongfield. I'll get something out as quick as I can. I'm in the middle of spring chores right now, so it's hard to get any time programming. I also have to put up my antenna this weekend (I've been doing all my testing in my workshop), so I'm a bit stuck for time at the moment.

I've been an engineer/programmer my whole life and have worked in quite a few languages. It's nice to have an opportunity to learn a new language (such as Python), but time becomes the issue.

I'm glad to hear that MP is at least pretty stable. When one is doing testing, one doesn't sit and watch entire movies so it's hard to get a feel for reliability. I've had MP hang as a zombied process quite a few times, but I write it off to playing around with settings too much.

Valdi, you mention Rogers. We're on Rogers too (I live just outside of Waterloo) and I've been trying to get off of cable. Unfortunately I have no options right now to have my cable Internet service moved elsewhere as no one seems to have a 3rd-party contract to provide cable Internet services in my area (and DSL is just too slow). I've gone to VOIP phone and should hopefully get rid of cable TV within the next couple of months. I have nothing against Rogers per se, they provide excellent service, but with my son's cell phone plan, I'm making a "car payment" to Rogers every month and it's just gone over the top. We've also had issues in the past with getting $200+ added to our bill because my son went over his text-messaging limit. It seems that kids simply can't stop when they get a warning about hitting a limit. To save money you either take away their phone (a fate worse than death) or give them a virtually unlimited plan.:(

I thought of a couple of refinements for the TV Rotator Plugin that I'd like to add so I'll try to get started on those during the week. For a first "testing cut", I probably won't add a set-up screen to the plugin (GUI screens take a fair bit of time), I'll just release a sample xml file that you can modify for your channels.

Have a great weekend!

Hey GJC Hope you had a productive weekend. I spent most of Sunday outside doing chores.

I hear you on the car payment thing, I'd have ditched cable years ago if only I could get my wife on board. Hopefully MP and a full antenna setup will bring about the end of cable in our house.

I would absolutely skip the GUI for now. Get something working and then worry about making it pretty later.

I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm still working on this. We've been in the middle of spring chores and it's been hard to put much time into the project.

I've been working on enhancing my prototype to include antenna side-lobes so that each channel can actually have more than one range of acceptable antenna positions. It complicates things, but goes a long way towards making your antenna rotator more transparent (you'll be able to schedule multiple recordings and not have to worry about figuring out the optimum antenna position, it will be calculated when each recording is about to start).

Nothing can be perfect, if you have a couple of weak channels that are 90 degrees apart, well, there's no hope for accommodating both channels at the same time.

I'm also coding this plug-in to support multiple TVServer clients and multiple TV cards. So I have a lot of testing/debugging to do.

I really want to get this right, so I hope you're not in too much of a rush. I hate putting out buggy stuff. Rest assured that this is not "vapourware". It's coming but I can't give you a definite time frame (as it's a struggle for time these days). As soon as I have something that looks solid I'll put out a release.

GJC, Take your time, I'm in no rush whatsoever. I'm just starting to transfer from IRSS to EventGhost as my Macro execution program of choice. I noticed that EG (EventGhost) has an Android application that I really want to integrate into my Win7 world to complement my AmpDroid and MediaPortal installation. I envision EG working along side non-RS-232 equipment somehow reading and writing the state of power/settings/surround of Amp and LCD to enable cycling thru different sound and picture settings based on what I'm doing inside MP. Anyways, I'm only up to reading about Python as a scripting language while at the same time as working fulltime/taking care of kids/short term and long term chores and trying out skins in MP to keep the family continually in a state of "Oh cool". Oh, and trying to keep my wife happy by always having MP up and running 24/7. In conclusion, my ADD is in full swing. Take your time.

On a different subject, what would you suggest as a starting point to get started on reading and writing to an XML file when a macro is executed by remote button press within MP? If this is off topic just ignore me.

An example would be:

Power button on remote is pressed
Macro is executed thru EG
Amplifier power state is read as 'OFF'
Amplifier power is turned on
Amplifier state is written as 'ON'
Etc......

Am I on the right track by learning python as a scripting language that will read and write to an XML file?

Thanks for your understanding valdi. I've got the guts working, but I'd like to do a GUI to help with setup. I'm just having trouble getting much time on it. I've been working on optimizing my antenna installation as I'm a bit disappointed at the number of channels I'm getting (8 English-speaking channels 24/7 with about 7 others as "tropos". I just completed my last bit of antenna hacking last night, but though the hack was successful, the final improvement wasn't enough. Oh well, that's OTA for you!

I'll post here as soon as I have something ready.

Tropospheric inversions. Where the signal is bent back down to earth by a weather front where cold air meets warm. Quit common during spring and early fall. You can get stations from far away for a few hours. All my Buffalo stations pretty much fall into that category.

Preamp? Canadian channels from CN Tower no problem. I could only get Buffalo with preamp and precise direction. Fox/NBC/CBS anytime. ABC only in mid afternoon. I like when it rains at night. reception is great.

Where are you located? You must be south of me to get Buffalo regularly. I'm just outside of Waterloo about 7km west of the north end of the city. My wife won't let me put up a tower, so my antenna is only up 30 ft. My TVFool report shows WNLO as my strongest Buffalo station at a NM of -1.2dbm. WNED is next best at -10.0, way too weak to consider for daytime viewing.
I have a CM4228HD with a CM7777 preamp. I modified the antenna to remove its phasing harness and use 2 baluns and a splitter. It helped the high-uhf channels a tiny bit, but Buffalo stations are in and out. WNLO is the best, I can actually get a lock on it during the day, but it's not that watchable until the evening.
I can only get 2 Toronto stations regularly, CBC (strong) and CIII (medium, has dropped out on rare occasion). We have a CIII very nearby in Paris ON, but my antenna simply won't do low-VHF, so I have to turn the antenna to Toronto to get it from there. I wish I could get CJMT, it's our favourite station on cable, but when I stop my cable service I won't get it anymore. It only comes in on the antenna during a good "tropo". They are supposed to move to channel 40, but the predicted signal strength will still only make it "occasional evenings and rainy days only".
It's going to be interesting to see how the family will react to the new home theatre PC setup once I stop the cable service. Hopefully Internet viewing will go a long way towards easing the transition, because our derth of OTA channels won't help much!

    Hi folks

I'm following this thread with interest.
This might be a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway: given how pervasive the DiSEqC standard is for satellite motor/positioner and switch control, is there a reason why it could not also be applied to antenna rotors? Obviously ATSC tuners don't seem to support the protocol at present... or at least I've never heard of any ATSC tuner supporting DiSEqC... but is there really no standard for automated antenna rotor control?
