I don't want to use solution 1. This would require both PCs to be turned on for the sole purpose of database access.

Solution 2: You meant "install it on the client" and the copy over, don't you? I'm not aware of how to install plugins in a TV-Server-only installation on the server. This would also require me to copy those databases again, every  time I add new media

Solution 3: I must have a look into this, this sounds by far the most interesting option. Only thing is that I'd have to enable a delay on MP startup/resume as the HTPC automatically wakes the server an it'll take 10-15 seconds after switching on the HTPC until the server is ready.
