How to get S/PDIF working???? (1 Viewer)

I have a GTX460 which is bitstreaming over HDMI to my TV.

I also have a Sony BDV-E370, which only has an S/PDIF in (no HDMI input).

I also have an Asus Xonar DS card fitted. I have linked a S/PDIF cable from the Xonar to the BDV-E370.

How do I get MP to output all sound over the S/PDIF on the Xonar?

No matter what I do, I just don't seem to be able to get any sound at all over it. I have tried setting windows to use the S/PDIF as default, I have tried setting ffdshow to use S/PDIF, and I have tried setting PDVD10 to use S/PDIF - and I think I have tried every combination inbetween!!

There seem to be so many options I just don't know which ones to set!!

I'm almost at the point of buying a new surround with a HDMI input!!

firstly u want to make sure that ur not bitstreaming audio over the hdmi with the nvidia GTX460 ..look in the nvidia settings and make sure ur Xonar is doing all the work instead (and is set as the "default audio device")

in ffdshow under "audio configuration" make sure u select all the options under "SPDIF" and make sure the "encode" mode is NOT on

in the Xonar software u will probably see an "SPDIF" mode..use it and do not use "HDMI" mode

in MP config app(under both TV and Video) make sure u use "default audio device" or select "Xonar"


...plug in ur SPDIF cable...

switch ur amp to the input channel u are sending to...

Thanks for the response.. As soon as the missus lets me on the HTPC I'll try some settings..

I am currently bitstreaming using the GTX460 over HDMI.. I don't recall seeing anything to let me set that any differently?

Also, I have the Xonar software installed, but I didn't make any changes in it - that was probably another mistake!

Also, I haven't even managed to get any sounds from Windows over the S/PDIF, so I suspect that is something I need to sort out for a start...

Thanks to the above, I have now got S/PDIF working, however it creates another problem!

The wife doesn't like surround sound and prefers just the normal tv (strange woman!!).

Is there any way to bitstream over the HDMI and also output through the S/PDIF at the same time? That way I could just switch the surround sound on when needed...

Otherwise, trying to change between bitstreaming and S/PDIF is a lengthly process - and far too complicated for the wife to do!

In MP "Settings" under both "Tv" "Video" "Music" sections there is an audio renderer.

This decides where the audio goes.

If u select "default audio renderer" then the audio goes to wherever windows default tells it to go.
If u select "Xonar" it will use that...or "nvidia" it will use that.

U can switch between them in the settings menu.

Ah cool - I'll give that a whirl tonight..

I seem to be in a bit of a mess with my audio codecs - when I use ffdshow audio codec, then I get an audio delay on some channels, and I also have Microsoft Audio Decoder, and some others (AAC and something else) that I can choose from!
