How to identify SW/HW blocking standby? (1 Viewer)

Hi!

I have some problems with standby. I have started to use For The Record as the scheduling and recording application. As long as I view TV, listen to music, etc, it works really nice and the HTPC will suspend after the specified timeout.

The problem starts once I have made a recording. For some reason it won't go back to suspend. I'm pretty sure this has something to do with the combination of 4TR and MP, since it works OK if I record from within MP only. The way 4TR works is to use Windows built-in power management, hence setting the timeout for standby from the control panel.

My question is: do you have any suggestions how to identify the process/program/hardware that is blocking the standby request? I have tried MCE Standby Tool but I can't understand how to use it to find out what is blocking the standby request from WinXP.

Any suggestions more than welcome!

The recording folder is a shared one and i know in Vista's power setting advanced, there is a option to "enable standby if sharing media" that needs to be selected, as will not allow standby whilst sharing files.

Must be something similar in XP

In a way you are right... I found a KB note from M$ that describes a bug related to shared files on WinXP:

A Windows XP-based remote computer no longer automatically enters standby or hibernation after you disconnect from that computer

4TR uses shared folders to specify where to store recordings. In my case both processes accessing the folder are on the same PC but apparantly this bug applies also then.

Once I had installed the fix my HTPC now goes into standby after recording as expected.

Knew that, thats why i pointed you in that direction , did not have time to research it myself.

Might be worthwhile letting dvdfreak know about this, because it should be in the install instructions.

Many thanks for putting me on the right track! Got similar hint from a member on the 4TR forum.

I posted a note on 4TR forum about this patch. I hope it can save some other users from the pains I've been through
