Found a way to turn off visualizations and album art in Windows Media Player and therefore also in mp.

You can download and install the Windows Media Bonus Pack for Windows XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/bonuspack.aspx

In this package there is a Null Visualization plugin that offers a new option to turn off visualizations and album art in Windows Media Player. Just choose the Null Visualization in WMP and this vis is also used in mp then.

If you don't want to install the Bonus Pack then download this file:
http://www.lepton.de/mp/nullvis.zip

The zip-File contains the nullvis.dll from the Bonus Pack but needs to be installed manually. Unpack the dll to
-> C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\Visualizations
-> (german) C:\Programme\Windows Media Player\Visualizations
Open Windows Media Player and go to 'View' - 'Visualizations' - 'Options'. At the bottom of that dialog press the Button 'Add' and choose/ look for nullvis.dll. Then you just have to activate the Null Visualization (Void).

German menu: 'Ansicht' - 'Visualisierungen' - 'Optionen' -> 'Hinzufügen'
