All my installs have a secret partition with 1 hard backup, + weekly incremental of system, they have a user restore cd, for which they can then browse to return to a particular working date, all updating is switched off, if they want anything upgraded or new installed I will do it for a couple of pints, now thats what i call cheap IT.

Also I keep a full backup of original install myself, just in case the hdd's fails, been pretty good mainly get phone calls just to have a chat about what is the latest in MP.

ps. Any networking i leave to a friend who is a specialist in that area, he just makes it look so easy when settings things up ;)

pps. all the people i have done this for are friends or recommended by friends, if they have no clue about computers i tell them to use MCE.

Chuck - I really can imagine how much of a devestating impact that might have had on your spcial and even antisocial life - hence, I really feel very sorry for you. As for trying to be at least a little helpful - did you ever hear about something called a "book"? :D As far as I am informed, there are some rather amusing of those around - maybe also in your neighbourhood ;-) Tell me, if you need something like a care parcel - I mean regareding such parcels we Germans still owe you Americans some... ;-) Did you already recover from all that terrible experiences meanwhile?

btw: MY MP works very well :D

    Ray,

    Have they been stable installs?

Just when I think "Hmmm... running well, not had to mess for a week" it all goes t!ts up. Now the bedroom client is playing up and not displaying any TV... if still no-go tomorrow I've threatened it with a clean install. It is this sort of thing that puts me off doing it for others.

That's the one thing with MP... It works fine for weeks on end, and then all of a sudden goes tits up, and you can spend days trying to fix it with a nagging wife ringing you at work and hassling you which makes it even harder to fix!!

I got everything back up ... just changed out the old power supply. Only missed a few days of TV shows, but found downloads to throw into TV Series. Not a problem with MP. I got a PSU with a quieter fan as well ... I can hear the hum of the subwoofer amp over the fan.

any other MP issues are a work in progress. :)
