Hi there,

I have a strange problem, occasionally my HTPC just switches off. Very often this happens when I start an action - e.g. I just switched to Basic Home and then it went off. I then have to pull the power cord to make it start again; the power button doesn't work. Though I cannot say exactly (since it does not happen that often) I would say that this happens since I installen 0.2.0.4.

Strangely, this has also happened in the past during XP boot sequence. However it NEVER happens when I boot Linux. This makes me believe that MP is not the reason for this behaviour.

OK, the obvious starting point would be to do a new installation of everything. I would like to have your opinion first before I go through the pleasure of hours of installing XP.

sounds as if xp is set to reboot on a system error. You can disable this by right clicking on "My Computer", select Properties, select Advanced Tab, and then under Startup and Recovery select Settings, deselect "Automatically Restart" under System Failure. click OK to save changes and exit. This wont fix it but will give you a blue screen and some idea what is causing the system error.

Could be a bad power supply. I had PC that was shutting down randomly and power button didn't bring it on and that was caused by a faulty power supply.

I had a similar issue after I had my HTPC running for a few months.

The key to gaining system stability was upping my DDR2 RAM voltage from 1.90V to 1.95V (max for my Asus M2N-E motherboard)

I had this problem last week i found that the was too much dust and crap under the CPU fan which was making it hard for my fan to cool my processor.

So i vacuumed inside the case and took the CPU fan off and vacuumed their.

Now my computer is much quieter and doesn't shut down randomly.

i had the same problem (computer randomly tuned hardly off and didn't turned on again when pressing the power button), but it seems that reconnecting the power-cord fixed it - very weird though

Hi all,

first of all, thanks for all your suggestions. This is really a great community.

I doubt that it is the PSU because I can let the system run for hours on Linux, and I never observe random power off. Also, the shutdown is most probably not totally random, since it's likely to happen just after I have presse one button.

Anyways, I will check all your proposals and let you know the results.

Unlikely, since genrally the machine's not on the internet, only for Updates etc.

So it shuts down, or immediately kills anything like a power failure?

You probably need to check your windows log too.
Check your control panel Power Options also.

What else is installed?
