    MediaPortal Version: V1.0 RC3

    Hello,

    I have the following problem:

All mp3's have an album art stored within the id3 tag.

However, some album art is not being shown within MediaPortal while in any other players (Winamp, WM) it is no problem at all.

Can anyone confirm to have successfully shown the embedded cover art in the following example file? Thank you!

Hello, sorry for that - I won't share such a file again.

Well, in MP i don't get any album information shown.

I have disabled to lookup the album art in the internet since all files contain the correct cover allready. But MP does not extract the album from this and some other files. It's strange since Winamp and all other tagging-apps show the embedded album. Re-adding did not work - also exchanging by another album pic.

    Thank you
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

in your first post you say that some coverart is not shown, in your second post here you say no coverart at all is shown.
If the last is the case, my guess is that you did not scan your music collection to the database. I have a lot of embedded cover art and I´d say they show up. Haven´t checked every file of course.

This manual part shows where to do that: https://www.team-mediaportal.com/manual/MediaPortal/Configuration/Music/Database

    Hi tomtom21000,

the 1st statement is still correct. I have approx 20k titles, all with an embedded cover in the id3 tag. Some of the files are shown without an cover in MP (only 50 or so) and I'm wondering why.

I have a similar (or same and are not explaining it right) problem. I keep my mp3s in an artist folder rather than an album folder, but the album art for everything in that folder gets set to the same cover - kind of like they are stacked. This is since I upgraded to RC3. It was never perfect IMO in RC2 but is even yougher in RC3. Also - RC3 does not like the "&" symbol at all!!

    Hello again,

I have prepared a test file - just 30 seconds of silence. Without any ID tagging except that there's an album art embedded within the file. MP does not show the album art. Is that by design? If so, I'd really appreciate that MP would show the embedded album art by default - without respect of any other tagging information.

Here's the link to the file - It's NOT copyrighted at all; Just 30 seconds of SILENCE -

Sorry but there's no common use case for your scenario and therefore we will not support extracting album art without decent ID3 tags.
MP needs valid information to identify one unique track out of thousands. Without valid ID3 tagging it _could_ extract the coverart of course but the thumbnail system wouldn't know when to display that particular cover.

If you're a music lover you'd go for a standard method to display album art which would work in almost every app and operating system: use folder.jpg
In addition this isn't restricted that much like ID3 tag images (Which should be only 64x64 images. Due to the weak standard however you could use e.g. all 28 bit of the extended V2.4 header to put an image in it - but don't ask devs to support such rubbish).

Well, the problem here is that i have some folders with miscellaneous artists collected by year. One such folder, the 1980s, contains ~400 titles of differenct artists of the 80s.

Regarding th virtual 64x64 limit - MP does currently extract any album art with different formats and of much greater size. So this is not the problem at my collection and the files noted above.
I understand that MP is designed to be fully dependant from unique id3 tags for each file. If that's correct, the test file should successfully identified if i set the following:

    title: tst title 01
    artist: tst artist 01
    album: tst album 01

I have tried that but MP still does not show the album art. Could you tell me what's missing? Or maybe I did not get the logic at all.

    Thank you
    Chris

Correction to the post above: With the test tag's mentioned the album art is now displayed.

But could you confirm the logic?

    Thanks

Confirmed issue with ID3 Album Art, but....

I can confirm there is indeed some issue with ID3 album art, but suspect the issue does not lie in the MP3 tag reading...

All comments below refer to DATABASE view (not share)

All my MP3's have embedded cover art (as per the original poster of this issue). I can confirm that MediaPortal is capable of reading the art (because the art is found in the list view (or any other view) for a single album... that is to say, every song within that album is rendered on screen with the embedded ID3 album art....

HOWEVER... the artists view (where multiple album covers are rendered in a 'collage' to represent a group of albums by one artist) is inconsistent.
The collage works for some folders and not for others. None of the folders contain a folder.jpg, or thu mbs.db (they are 'clean').

The issue is clearly NOT in the reading the ID3 tag (since I've already mentioned that the image can be found in some views).
The issue does not appear to be skin related (since it occurs in all skins I have, inc Blue3, Xface 1.6, Monochrome 2.2)
The issue does not appear to be related to the number of albums by an artist
The issue does not appear to be related to the embedded album art size (image dimensions, or file size)
The issue is not random, as it occurs with the same files repeatedly

I'm unsure if this helps - but, the first 18 artists of my collection all work perfectly.... then from the next few hundred, only two worked. Could be coincidence, but I wonder if it's a memory, or physical storage issue for the cached album art?

Just to make clear once more...

Music is arranged as follows (logically and physically)

    Artist ---> Album ---> Tracks

The artists view is where the issue lies (only works for some)
The album view works fine (proving the art is readable and renderable)
    The tracks view works fine.
