IMDB movie conflicts? (1 Viewer)

I scan for movies and I get "conflicts" with my home movies.
The naming format of these is.

F:\my videos\Easton\20101209_211466.m2ts
F:\my videos\Easton\20101210_110301.m2ts
etc...

I suspect the problem is in the path? or the similar filename. But the files do have different names. Unless the DB search only using a short string? What is the format it's searching for? why are these various files (I have 100 movies or more than have similar names at the start).

Others like

F:\my videos\Easton\Easton car\jeep-1.wmv
F:\my videos\Easton\Easton car\jeep-2.wmv
etc...

it has problems with these though names are different.
Suggestions please?

I can somewhat imagine the similar names, but your first file is quite different from the others. I've not found the forum to be real helpful, maybe they just don't know? Surely someone knows how the database is searching files.

I've pretty much had to solve all my own problems. I got it working fairly well this weekend, with a couple "ODD KINKS". And this is of them. My first thought is "what does it define as a conflict"? Duplicate names AND?

My next thought is maybe we should look in the logs. I'll look into that, I have other issues and trying to tweak those things as well. I'll create new threads for those problems.

Hi rojoyinc, I'm somehow confused, what do you try to scan at all ? If you're trying to scan you home movies with IMDB database, for sure you will not find anything in online movie database like IMDB.

If you want to add you home movies or something similar, you can do it only by adding them manually into database by using Video database editor Video Database 1.2.0 - MediaPortal Wiki

If, I'm wrong please can you explain more what you're trying to do with files named like 20101209_211466.m2ts?

Being new to MP - I assumed it was like itunes where it has to get your paths and then it goes and scans the dirs for files to add to the (listing/database?)
    Not needed?

I'm just tring to make them show up in MP under videos.
I'm rather confused about "moving pictures" vs "videos". Under videos, I can search shares, Genres, Actors, Title etc. (there are no actors in my videos).
They would be in "motion pictures" (which may translate to "moving picture" in other languages). So at this point, I'm trying to clean up the library with
"moving pictures = commercial movies" and
"videos = home HD shot video clips".

At this point under VIDEOS and shares, I don't see any home shot videos. (so I try to scan the path dirs I've entered? make sense?)
Like itunes scans the music dir to add new songs etc.

    thanks

Ok, now is more clearer what you need. So to start from the beginning I need to explain some things for using videos in MP.

First of all, My Videos can be separate into two things, as movie catalog with it's database and viewer for video files with similar features as you browse and play videos through Windows Explorer. In Media Portal we call it video views and they can be distinguish as Share and Database view.

Share view (Shares View - MediaPortal Wiki) is simple one and it's just like I wrote, some kind of video files browser with some extra options for file management and movie file scan for adding them into video database.

Database views (Database Views - MediaPortal Wiki) is handled through SQL Lite database which are semi-automatically filled through scan via Configuration or within MP itself in share view. Database view is a short name for more views like (Title, Actors, Year, Genres...) which will group your movies according to those database fields. You can look this view as a simplified Moving Pictures. Database view depends on online movie databases like IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/)or TMDB (http://www.themoviedb.org/movie). As moving pictures add-on did that job better, smarter and ofc. was easier to maintain outside of MP, My Videos was not updated for a long time and it started to fail as movie catalog. In MP 1.2.0 it will be again alive and kicking as a starting point for movies (Video Database 1.2.0 - MediaPortal Wiki) but till then better solution is Moving Pictures. Ofc, MoPi is still better and I recommend it to every movie fan, but in 1.2.0 My Videos can be starting point and user can decide if he want to switch to a next lvl.

Both views depends on your shared folders (Video Folders - MediaPortal Wiki). You can add more folders and all of them (including CD/DVD drives) will be visible in share view and you can start playing videos immediately after selecting one of them. There is no need to scan anything for those files. So, you can add your share folder with your home movies in configuration (you can check it as default so that folder will be initially loaded when you enter in My Videos), select one of the files and play it.

In short, for your case, you only need to add your videos shared folder and that's all. All your videos inside that folder will be visible and playable in My Videos share view within MP without need to scan them.

Thanks big help. My stuff's working better. I couldn't run most home videos with default player. I branch out to external player now VLC - with skin to match my MP pretty well. only thing is at the end I have to right click and close the player. (any one out there suggest a way to have the player open - play and then close?)

VLC seems to play every format of video I have.

A better solution would be to get the right codecs to play your media inside MediaPortal. VLC works because it has internal filters for just about everything, but skipping out to an external player is always a bit of a cludge IMHO. If you can use mediainfo on your files and post the output, we may be able to help with a codec recommendation. Alternatively, SAF is a codec pack designed for MP that can play just about any format you can throw at it.
