I run what's called a single-seat configuration (server+client on same machine). Don't let the whole server+client thing confuse you, the server part just refers to the fact that the TV-Engine is separate from MediaPortal (the client). This is better for a few reasons, one of which is the fact that one can't crash the other one. TV-Engine 3 (the tv server) is better than TV-Engine 2 as far as stability, flexibility, and compatibility goes. It will also allow you to stream TV over your network or over the Internet.
Keep in mind when you install MediaPortal that TV-Engine 2 will automatically be installed with it. You could give it a try and see how it works for you. If you have any problems then you can go through the 10-15 minute process of installing TV-Engine 3.
