Hi
I wonder if anybody can help me.
About 2 weeks ago I hadn't even heard of media portal but I had a hankering to put together a media centre
machine.

Being a bit of a Linux fan I had a little search for ' open source media centre' and found the wonderful MediaPortal site.

So I installed the software on my XP machine to try it out (no TV card).

Excellent software!, music player worked fine, picture library worked fine, weather for downtown Corby here in the UK
worked OK. Even added in some plug-ins and set up (manually) EPG which worked.
all was well!

I borrowed a TV card off of a friend to test the TV side of things but I had a poor antenna and
it was an old Hauppage card (year 2000) and I wasn't sure that I had installed the right drivers.
So not suprisingly there was no TV.

So impressed was I with the rest of the software that I ordered up a Hauppauge Win TV-HVR 1300
card.
I installed the card together with the Hauppauge software and drivers which all worked OK with the Hauppauge software.
(Although I can only get 2 analouge channels with my current poor antenna)

So then, with great expectations and excitment I started up the wonderful Media portal.

It worked OK!, I ran the TV setup wizard and found the 2 channels.

I flicked about the various menus.
All was well.
Then I tried to record a bit of TV to see if it would work.
It appeared to be ok. I pressed stop on the Hauppauge remote and I was prompted
If I really wanted to stop.
I selected Yes and then moved through other screens to see where the saved file was.
Then the software froze and would not start again.
I kept getting 'mediaportal.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close'

So I tried re-installing and the I got

mediaportal has been successfully installed

but then when I tried running either of the programs I got:-

configuration.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close

mediaportal.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close

I have since tried restoring back to before the original installation of mediaportal
with and without the TV card being installed, again downloading the latest version
of media portal and attempting to reinstall.

and unfortunately I still get the following messages:-

mediaportal has been successfully installed

configuration.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close

mediaportal.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close

I would be very grateful if someone could help me to get back onto the right track.

thanks

Mike

Can't help you with other than say:
    Attach your logs

    (Needed for bug tracking)

    Se: ...\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\log

I believe the MediaPortal and error-log should be attached

    Oh, and: WELCOME!

    Hi Spragelknas

thankyou very much for your welcome and your assistance.
I have uploaded the files but this is strange to me, I thought I would just attach then to this reply rather than upload then seperately.
    So much to learn.
    Anyway thanks for your assistance.
I have fond memories of Norway, I went there on Holiday when I was about 13 (35 years ago!) to stay with some friends of my Fathers in Fredikstad.
    3 cheers for Norway!

    thanks

    Mike

    Hi again:)

I am definitely not the expert here, but I recommend you to give as much info as possible about your setup. In particular your graphic-card. The experts normally don't bother answering post without specs and logs, that is why I am asking you to do it (*). Most probably, I will not be the one that finds the solution to your problems.

You could try this tool tom find more info: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

You could also try installing latest SVN, in case some bug-fixes has been done (can't hurt?. Found HERE

Oh, and Fredrikstad is a beautiful place. Been there a couple of times, but I live far from it (Stavanger).

    Thankyou for your guidance Spragleknas.
I have used the tool that you directed me to and I have updated my system spec. I have also installed the latest SVN.
Unfortunately the configuration which autostarted fell over straight away with the same error message as before.

This is very frustrating for me that the system installed and ran fine previously but now won't even configure.
I thought I may have inadvertently uninstalled something when I removed the old TV card.
But now that I have restored back to the original dat eof working installation I would have thought all would be ok.

If anybody can help me I would be very grateful.

    thanks

    Hi,
You should do a clean install of MediaPortal, remove it using add/remove in windows, then rename MediaPortal folder to something else & reboot & install MP again (make sure you have updated @ win update, that means all of the updates)

    Regards
    Roy

I have just had a quick look at your MediaPortal.log file, and there are a few lines in it like this:-

    2007-02-14 19:54:52.935598 [Info.][6]: Command: view tv channel:BC NE ```@` @``@

that suggest that your TV database file is corrupt ... :(

Could you delete (or rename) the file "TVDatabaseV21.db3" and then run MediaPortal Setup again, and run the TV channel scan (autotune). This should rebuild the TV database file and have you back in business again.

Please post your results back here. Also, please complete the "unknown" items in your System Specification.

    HTH ... :)

    Hi ronilse
thankyou for your help. I did as you suggested and removed media portal. Deleted the Team Media folder and reinstalled to a new folder.
I am up to date with all win updates with the exception of Gen advantage. Unfortunately when I tried running setup I got the same error message as before.
The message pops up almost straight away. It doesn't even try to open up any windows.

    Hi Taipan
thankyou for your suggestions. I did notice the corrupt channel name when it was originally scanned but I thought it was just a string for the channel name. Bearing in mind that I have a really useless antenna at the moment I figured that the channel name had just been 'misheard' by the card as a result of a poor signal.
Before trying ronilse's suggestion i tried renaming TVDatabaseV21.db3 to TVDatabaseV21_old.db3 and running the setup. Unfortunately it fell over straight away. I have updated my system spec now and there are only a couple of unknowns but I am not sure how to repost the spec without starting a new thread.

It's just very strange how solid the installation was originally but now it falls over straight away.

cheers and thanks to you both for your suggestions

    Hi,
It's the error related to D3D or something like that, it could be that you need to update/reinstall your graphic card driver?
Or copy the error message & past it to MediaPortal Pastebin & link back here.

    Regards
    Roy

    radical solution but ok now

thankyou very much for your support.

I tried many things but could not stop MP crashing immediately on startup.

In the end I have taken the radical step of completey re-installing XP and I am happy to report that all is well now.
MP seems solid once again. I have yet to sort my TV card although it works OK with it's supplied software.

    thanks again for listening
