installing error (1 Viewer)

Hey i was attempting in install mediaportal on my computer after reading about it on the pcauthority website and it seemed to be going alright it was downloading componants and doing its thing then after downloading something not positive what is was the computer reset and now all it comes up with when i turn it on is "intel inside, desktop boards" and wont progress any further, i had my portable hard drive plugged in when i did it and of i boot my computer up with that plugged in (via usb) it comes up with a "STOP: fatal system error blah blah" message, what can i do to fix this cheers in advance.

Maybe take advantage of the situation and just install Windows from scratch and then make an image of it so you can easily restore if anything like this ever happens again.
