[TV] Invalid thumbs on H264 material (1 Viewer)

The client will not generate thumbs for recordings. The server sometimes does, but this seems to not be reliable. I occasionally find jpg files in the recording folder, but not always.

I seem to always get a jpg file created just sometimes it is 0KB. The settings are in the client config but thumbs are created by TVServer

Anyway I have tried to find out how thumbs are generated a few times without any replies I can see there are jpg files in the recordings folder (the ones created by mtn.exe) then there are also other thumbs (small and large) in the the thumbs folder in client folder. I am not clear which ones are used by client and how / when they get created

Do you use rtsp or SMB for multiseat TV?

I do have a client I use rarely but I have set that to use shares and not RTSP but the problem occurs on the single seat machine I use all the time.

The only other way I can think to test this is to share the recordings folder over the network, add it to 'my videos' and browse it there. If the thumbs are created, then there is no problem. Please do this to check the files! However, you will still not see the thumbs in 'recorded tv', and this would be normal expected behaviour.

Not sure what you mean... Does MyVideos force building thumbs then? As above this is single seat but I will delete the jpgs in recording folder and thumbs directory and then add the recordings folder to MyVideos tonight to see what happens.

One of the team members is currently looking into this problem at the moment, so please bear with us.

Obviously not a huge issue just would be nice to get this working. Would rather have this broken and a really quick stable MP.

However, your testing and clarification of your setup would be appreciated.

Will help where I can, I would love to go through the code but simply don't get the time. If someone could point me in the direction of where the code is I can try and work it through from there.

I am getting a bit confused. On the one hand you say that thumbs are generated by client. On the other hand, you say you are using single seat

I thought the client was generating thumbs...
Edit: Ahhh think I may have confused you slightly... I am talking about the MP Client here as opposed to a client machine....

Also, your system spec shows a pinnacle 7010ix TV card, which as far as I know is DVB-S, not DVB-S2 - how is it receiving HD h264 content?

BBC HD and ITV HD are both transmitted in H264 but are on DVB-S not DVB-S2.

Right, let's try and get ourselves straight. When you say MP client, you are talking about the MediaPortal application, even though it is running on the same computer as the TV server?

Assuming this is the case, if the MediaPortal application is creating the thumbs, would they be stored as a .jpg file in the same folder as the recording? I think there might be a setting for this in config, so you would have to check. I am not at a computer with mediaportal right now.

Regarding 'my videos' it will create the thumbs if they are not present (assuming you have enabled thumbnail creation in config) and store them in C:\Program Data\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\thumbs\videos (or something like that anyway), not in the same folder as the actual file.

So, if you delete the .jpg files, add the 'tv recordings folder' as a share in 'my videos' and then run mediaportal and browse to this folder in 'my videos' it should then start to create the thumbs. You will have to give it a few minutes. I would view it in list view, and scroll up and down the list and see if any thumbnails appear on the left (assuming you are using blue3wide.

Incidentally, you have checked that this is not a skin issue? Presumably it is not since you are getting the 0 kb file.s

If the thumbnails appear in 'my videos' then you can be sure that thumbnail creation is okay. If they do not, then this is the problem.

If you could do this simple test, we will have some information with which to go forward. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.

As I have said, there are issues with thumbnail creation in TV server, and these are being looked into.

OK if MyVidoes appears to be working pretty well with thumbs I will add recordings folder to MyVideos, delete jpgs, open up client and then leave for 5 mins or so. Hopefully there will be something useful in these logs (and hopefully it will replicate the 0KB problem).

Seems as when I run the MP mtn manually I still get 0KB files I am certainly hoping this will be case...

I will try and do some more digging and load up some logs about 9pm tonight.

Never installed CoreAVC but the decoding for thumbnails is surely done by the ffmeg DLLs the exe is compiled against (avcodec-51.dll)

Version appears to not bother about file type... If I change it to mkv, mpg or even txt it still identifies the audio and video streams correctly but produces exactly the same output as above and a 0KB thumb)

Well I guess requiring 467 seconds to generate a thumbnail is not good.

Does MP call mtn.exe in such a way as to set a time limit? If so, this would be reasonable and would make sense.

MP just runs mtn.exe as I ran above. The MP version of mtn.exe has been recompiled but I don't think they changed anything to do with timeouts etc? Looks like something has changed though which is what is breaking thumbs being created
