Greetings Team_MediaPortal....I have been a Windows MCE user for five years but sorely dissapointed in it's abilty to be customized and work in a server client environment. I am desperate to make the transition to MediaPortal...

However, I can not get IRSS to learn my STB IR codes.

I have been stuck on this for 2 weeks and probably 35 hours. I have read and tried every thing mentioned in this forum and others with no change in behaviour/status. My wife is threatening to leave me because of my MediaPortal obsession. I'm at work right now and can/will provide log files tonight( please indicate specifically which ones are needed) ....but here is my situation.

I have tried fresh installs of both 32 bit Windows Vista SP2 and Windows 7 RTM on multiple high end PC platforms
I am using MCE receiver and blasters.
I have tried multiple versions of IRSS (sorry can't recall the exact ones and I would want to be accurate)
I have made sure that Windows Media Center services are disabled
I have attemped the MCEir.dll patch and GEOV's regsitry edits.
I have attemped the MCE vista patch.
I have tried other IR brokers such as HIP and Girder.

Regardless of these efforts I get the same result. When I go to learn an IR command I get an 'IR command not learned' time out. As soon as I get that error message, when I click OK for 'try again' the dialogue box immediately reappears. I also noted that the TEST button and IR Port designation (i.e. both, 1, or 2) are always grayed out.

To add insult to injury, when I attempt an install of Windows 7 Media Center I can complete the entire setup and be watching TV within about 28 minutes cradle to grave, STB remote IR learning and all with no bugs. My wife caught me doing this and said put in MCE and go mow the lawn !

Any thoughts or guidance is greatly appreciated...I am obsessed to get this fixed. I want "He was one of the first in his community to successfully use MediaPortal" on my tombstone one day.:D

Best,

George

Forgot to mention I have also attempted to remediate the issue under multiple versions of MediaPortal including 1.0 Alpha, 1.0 Beta, and 1.02.

Sorry, I meant 1.1 Alpha and Beta

Hi Lidra,

I am so grateful for your advice. Regrettably, I had already tried build 1.4.2.2975 and had no luck. I played in debug client as you suggested. It indicates that it connects successfully to the reciever and blasters. Then I click "Learn IR" , it says "IR Learning" but I get no response from the system until it times out. I do notice that the red LED on the IR Reciever flashes when I press a key on the remote until I click "Learn IR" at which point the red LED no longer respondes until the timeout occurs when it responds once again.

Any other ideas??? :D:D:D

I had the same issues like you. When I was clicking Lear IR it will wait for a while and then time out, after that the error comes right away.

I am no expert on IR server, but I played with it the last couple of days.

Can you try the following:
Start the IR Debug Client (using the version I pointed out) , connect to the server and push your remote next to the MS receiver (when I say next it needs to be 2 or 3 cm away from receiver) , and see if you see a bunch of codes on the test area. If you do, then you have a Learn button on the Debug Client. Press that, push your remote and follow the messages on the test area. See if the Debug Client gives you details about what happens. After you push that learn button, try the Test button as well, and see if the blaster is doing anything.

Good luck,

Cheers,

Lidra

Thanks Lidra,

I will try this as soon as I return from a business trip. I am out of town until September 13th but wanted to let you know that I appreciate the further assistance and will get back to you soon after my return.

Hi Lidra and all others,

Back from my business trip...

OK, so I went back to Debug Client (2795) as suggested. I did get some interesting results. I noted that once connected, I could get IR Codes to display in the Status window but only if I use non-Dish Network STB remote controls. I have 4 of Dish Network STB remotes, each different revisions, and non of them register an IR code in the Status Window. However, when I take one of my vanilla TV remotes and place it up to the IR reciever I get an abundance of codes displayed. I also tried this with build 3086 and achieved the same results.

Does this give you any clues? Remember, I am able to learn all four of my Dish Network STB remotes when running Windows Media Center setup on the very same computer.

THANKS. I AM MOST GRATEFUL FOR ANY HELP!:D

Sad to say, but I surrender. In spite of dozens of hours attempting to get this working I am at a loss to get IRSS to learn my Dish remote controls. Interestingly, I purchased LM Remote Keymap and it learned my Dish IR codes in a snap (as does Windows 7 MCE). Not sure if LM Remote Keymap can interface with MediaPortal's blaster controls??? At any rate, LM Remote Keymap does work perfectly with SageTV. Installed and had SageTV with LM up and running in about 90 minutes (channel changing on my STB worked beautifully, thanks Stephane!!!!) ... maks me long for all the wasted hours with MediaPortal. Still, I hope one day to take another look at MediaPortal in hopes that I will be able to "blast" my way through a sucessful install.
