Is Media Portal Free? Seems Not! (1 Viewer)

I was looking through ebay today and stumbled upon this product which looks remarkably similar to media portal, which I was sure was "free". Is this company selling this item illegally or breaking any copyright rules?

MediaPortal is free and completely open source. Still it is not illegal to ask money for a CD with MP on it. The consumer pays for the CD and the delivery of it. Not for MediaPortal itself.

That's MP allright. And yes, it's legal (unfortunately). You can sell open source programs, you just have to hope that not every client will find that it's available free as well.

But hes offering it as a digital download, not on media at all. There are other software titles hes also offering for digital download. Doesn't seem right.

Looks like its a "hot potato" on the forum. I guess it all boils down to the fact: do the original Authors mind? If not then "no foul".

Just seems weird that an unrelated person can benefit financially from someone elses work by providing a link to download the files that are freely available from this site.

if you see something like that on e-bay, report him @ ebay.
in many cases you will see that entry (and that guy) removed within a few days.
