Ok I have been playing with mediaportal for about a month now and i am setting up a test unit at the house first problem is. How bad is it to have the server and client on same cpu.... I finally got the machine up and going and it is taking 15 min to boot up and the remote works and doesn't work i am very confused about what is the best system to use i have vista ultimate would it be better to install vista basic or xp pro. with xp the tuner did not map channles correctly it didn't give them numbers it gave hexadecimal codes. and i could get that I have been back and forth with the os about ten times i have any os at my disposal and would like to know what is recommended for my setup. i love the idea of mediaportal it is everything you could want a mediacenter to be. it took a while to get the epg working and i have heard if you don't use the paid grabber nothing else would work right well i got that down pat now just need to know what the answer for my questions is for this setup.

p.s. as a side note if the server needs to be stand-alone then what is the min good quality requirments for the server i have a bunch of p3 and other p4s around but ram is an issue....

Not meaning to be rude, but I found your post a little difficult to understand. I think you are asking what OS is recommended for an HTPC where both the client and slave are installed on the same PC (am I correct?).

If you have any OS available, I would recommend Win 7 (professional is probably ideal) as it is easiest to set up and includes modern codecs supplied as default and I have found the driver support very good. There is lots of discussion as to which is best between 32 bit and 64 bit. Since MP is 32 bit I chose 32 bit OS to keep things simple, but there is no reason why 64 bit won't work.

I have never tried Vista (I didn't think it was worth paying for it since it was so bad). Before I bought Win 7 I used XP SP3 (with the required patches installed in accordance with the Wiki installation guide) and although no-where as good as Win 7, it still did the job just fine!

If this is a question then not bad at all Most people probably run TV server and client on the same machine (referred to in the documentation as a single seat setup).

There should be no difference in running TV server on XP, Vista or Win7. The only real differences are to do with video playback (which are more advanced in Vista and again in Win7)

Again not sure if this is a question or not. The issue is what sources of EPG data are available to you? I think some people in the US do use schedules direct as a source of EPG data and this costs after a trial but there is no other source they can obtain

WOW the problems are solved all that i needed to do was use windows 7. the system is running fast and there are no problems with epg or the tuner now they both work great. Now all i have to research is mapping the buttons on the hauppauge remote and the machine will be set to go back up for use. thank you all for the help. I never would have thought that windows 7 would be the best choice of os for mediaportal.....I have always seen win xp but for some reason it did not work for me.
