Jerky video and slow gui after S3 sleep (1 Viewer)

Hi,

After a fresh boot i have really smooth dvd and xvid playback. Im using reclock to match video framerate to 25fps (for example from 23.976).

But after a S3 sleep and wakeup again, video is really jerky and totally unwatchable. Also the gui behaves more sluggish and animations are not as smooth.

Only solution i've found is to restart MePo.

So basically the re-init after the sleep isn't done properly.

I've had this problem in versions 0.2.2.0 stable, rev 14871 and 0.2.3.0 RC1

First log is after fresh reboot, i start MePo and start a dvd, all is ok.
Second log is a start of MePe, i go to sleep mode through my MCE remote power button, i wake the computer and start a dvd, jerky video and sluggish gui.
error,vmr9 and recorder.log are all from second log, ie when i reproduce the problem.

Please help and thanks for all awesome Mediaportal support/development.

Hi Erik

I have a similar problem although I only noticed it after exchanging a Gigabytye G-Force 6200 card for an Asus EN8500GT Silent.
However, restarting MediaPortal does not help me but restarting Windows does, which is not ideal.
So I guess the problem is either the Nvidia drivers or Windows XP Pro. I have seen a fix for Windows which may indicate the problem, which can be found here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912067

However this is only for MCE 2005 (which of course is a superset of XP Pro) and the text implies it fixes a problem introduced in Rollup 2 for MCE.

At present I can almost eliminate the problem by turning off hardware acceleration in the PowerDVD Decoder settings within the DirectShow Filter Control tab of MediaPortal setup. Part of the point of buying the new card was to use the hardware acceleration. If the new drivers due in June don’t fix it I may have to try Vista.

This may not help you but it is another thing you can try.

I don't have options for PowerDVD in Mediaportal setup, presumably because i don't have that codec installed :)

Can i get it for free somewhere? Or do i need PowerDVD software...?

Can it handle both dvd and xvid?

I'll give it a shot.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Erik

I think it is probably only Codecs such as PowerDVD and PureVideo that have the Hardware Acceleration option that I should be able to use but had to disable to reduce jitter and dropped frames after resuming from hibernate.
If you are not using these (which I should have known if I had read your system spec properly) then the way I reduced the problem for me unfortunately isn't going to help you.

As far as I know the PowerDVD Codec comes with the PowerDVD application and I am not sure that buying this would solve your problem.

Success! :D

I tried the Media Center Edition that supposedly fixed the problem, and problem is solved !! Wooo! :)

Some wierd things to notice though is that DVD never stutters after S3 sleep, but xvid with ffdshow does, unless i close mediaportal before sleep and open it after sleep (which the MCE sleep tool is now doing beautifully, so no problem).

Hi

An update also from me is that my issue seems to have been fixed by switching to Vista (as I assume that whatever fixed the XP resume problem is already in Vista).

Turning hardware acceleration off, as I mentioned before, left me with Jitter level of about 1 which is barely noticable apart from in scrolling news tickers and credits.

In Vista Jitter is normally 0 and scrolling is smooth. However on the downside the Nvidia drivers do not have all the settings yet that the XP versions have and the output from the graphics card to the TV does not quite fill the screen. Hopefully this will be resolved as the drivers develop.
