Ok, so it seems that if I record a show that is longer then 2 hours or so it plays fine but if I try to fastforward through them they just lock up. I tried playing the files in media player and they did the same thing so it doesn't look like it is necessarily MP but I have a movie in 'my videos' that I recorded before with another program and it isn't doing this it fastfowards very quickly in fact even in MP.

So just out of curiosity I converted one of these shows that I am refering to to mpeg instead of the dvr-ms that MP originally saved it in and now it will fastforward just fine. However there are a couple problems.

One, the program I downloaded to convert the file not only was a trial that left this scirpt accross the screen after finishing but it really compressed it and I lost a lot of quality. I don't think that that should have happened. Isn't DVR-MS basically just mpeg anyway?

It also won't play in MP now. It will play in everything else including media player 10 which doesn't really make sense to me since if it will play in Media Player it should play in Media Portal shouldn't it?

I've seen posts related to converting to mpeg from within Media Portal. Is this possible? I can't find anything just from looking around in my main screen. I notice the compress option but it doesn't seem to do anything and I seem to not find any files when I try to use dvr-mpeg cutter plugin but I don't see any way to configure it to find them. I know that I have written a lot of questions and no one thus far has answered this post. I don't really understand why dvr-ms wouldn't fastforward anyway but if someone could please help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I can think of is have you tried using a different Audio/Video codec? Perhaps the Intervideo is having issues. Try the default ones that are installed with MediaPortal, for example.

EDIT: Also, does this only happen with fast forward, or also when you use the left and right keyboard arrows to skip forward? Or the Up arrow for a big jump forward.

Yeah it happens anytime you move forward no matter what. You can pause fine and it will allow you to skip back to the begining but if you fast forward you can't do anything after that.

I'm sorry what are the default codecs? I see a lot of talk about all kinds of codecs so I don't really know what I'm supposed to be using.

Also, it was doing it in other programs I would try to play it in as well like media player or gbpvr or ati player they would all do the same thing if you tried to fast forward those specific files. Converting them to mpeg fixed it for all of those though. Except that now Media Portal won't play it. It did create a seperate file when I converted it though so now there are two with the same name except one is an mpeg and one is dvr-ms could Media Portal be getting confused over which one to play?

i just read through this thread for the first time (initially thought it related to long show titles ), and i've seen the same thing a couple of times. i always thought it meant something had gone screwy with the recording, like a reception dropout or something, and hadn't noticed that long duration was causing it!

i reconize this problem too.
recordings longer then 2 hours give problems with skipping, also it looks like that ending the recording is false (to early).
maybe the problem is that the recording is ending not normal?

Not ending normal how? If so can you think of anyway to solve the problem. Why would converting to mpeg solve that?
