Looking for a cheap remote (1 Viewer)

I am looking for a decent cheap remote setup for general use on my HTPC and in media portal

i am looking at this item
DealExtreme: $23.29 InfraRed Remote Control for PC with USB Receiver Dongle

not sure if that will do the job


Can anyone recommend any cheap remotes?

Hi r3n0,

I have the MCE remote and even though it is more expensive than the unit you mentioned above it is

- widely used
- got built-in support in MP
- got excellent support in IR Server
- works very well with MP

so it may be worth the extra $ just to avoid any problems setting it up.

I'm not being paid by M$ but with the MCE remote you also get the IR-blasters, which are very useful when you want to control other units, like the TV, audio amp, etc. With IR server you receive the command from the remote, translate that into for instance the on/off IR code for the TV and blast that through the IR blaster.

I just went ahead and bought this
Buy the Gyration Universal Remote Control for PC and other Computer keyboards & mice at circuitcity.com

it acts as an air mouse, can control up to 3 IR devices and i can reprogram the keys with EventGhost

that remote looks awsome. How does it work? I like the RF.

I currently use the MCE IR Reciever with a Logitech Harmony 550 remote so that I can control My Reciever, TV, HTPC, DVD Player with macros setup and no IR Blaster wires. Not super cheap but works nicely.
