    Hi redmist

For skipping ads, try comskip. Working 95% of the time for me with the default settings. Skipping ads with pressing a single button. I have heard that some people use custom settings to get more accuracy so search around if it does not initially work for you.

This is how I have my Skip Steps set up. I never use fast-forward or reverse buttons up by the play button.

I have the right & left arrows set for 3 minutes and the up & down arrows set for 30 sec. (see image below to see how) I usually have to hit the up arrow once and the bottom arrow once, maybe twice and I hit the restart of the show spot'on (US). I probably should just manually set it 210 seconds (3:30) instead of 3 min but I've gotten set in my ways, lol, and the 3 min jump forward matches up the last commercial break for most shows. I like having the up & down arrows for 30 sec jumps in case I want to watch a scene again so the combo of the two works well for me.

So on my model of MCE remote, it ends up working like this...

And if all else fails...ie, I'm too lazy, I fall and break both my wrists, or have orange cheesey cheeto debris on my fingers, I have my dog trained to run over to the computer to skip commercials.

I'm always having to get onto him, though...since teaching him the basics of using MediaPortal, he often stays up way too late watching Animal Planet on the lappy.

And yes, glasses ARE expensive to get for your dog, if you can even find an Optometrist to do the exam.

It doesn't require any thought and I don't have to worry about the lag...
The lag can be reduced by cutting down the default 1500 ms (which is why I suggested 300ms instead). If you cut right down then you can treat MP just like MCE as the skip should occur immediately you press the button - you'd get your 8 x 30 second jumps.
