i don't know what exactly was the trigger(that means my htpc worked without problems for a while now) but for a short time my htpc hangs an startup (i have mediaportal in autostart) with the message "initializing directx". if i kill mediaportal process and restart mediaportal, everything works fine.

I had similar issue, and solved it by delaying MP startup w/30 sec. You could give it a try.

I had exactly the problem in Windows 7, I found that Windows 7's welcome screen was hanging for around 25 seconds then mediaportal was hanging with the message "initializing directx".

This all started after I changed my Windows desktop background to a solid colour, I set my Windows 7 desktop background back to the bog standard Windows 7 logo wallpaper and Windows did not hang on the welcome screen for any more than 5 seconds and the problem with mediaportal hanging was also solved without the need for setting a delay at startup.

It certainly helped me, please post back to this thread to let us know if it resolved your problem too.

- use startup delay (MP Config/General/Startup Delay)

Since I didn't activated Windows 7, after a few days it told me, Windows is illegal. Then Aero-Design was deactivated and Background was black. I bought Windows, activated iit and forgot to select a Design. Aero was active, but no background. MP hangs at Loading DirectX!

But selecting a Design did the job

I had the same thing. I fixed mine by disabling the aero effects in windows 7. I don't use the computer for anything but a htpc so I don't need the eye candy.

Well... I still use the +30 sec start-up delay to get around this (don't want to use the default themes w/sound), but if anyone else has a better workaround; I'm all ears

do you have a color as background of your desktop?

for me, the solution was to use an image instead of a color (ok, i created an image with just one color =), but this did the trick). mediaportal starts again smoothly.
