great post. I havent touched MP for a couple of years and am thrilled at the improvements. Back when I first looked at MP they couldnt even do TV.

I just ran through this and have it up and running already but I still have some tweaks I am looking into...

1) I need to be able to sort the movies somehow, either with genre tags or by file structure. I have all of the kid friendly movies in a specific folder and allow my daughter to select from anything in that list. I would be OK with different enus on the home screen like "Watch My Family Movies" or something and have that menu only show whats in a specific DIR.

2) music sorting...Genre, then artist, then album is preferred

3) need to figure out the best way to get encoded TV shows to come up, as I rip seasons from disc frequently.

4) setup My Netflix plugin

I am sure its all out there, I just need to figure it out.

Idvsego,
Your number 3 question, If you followed the guide just rip the tv show seasons in a folder (e.g. Bones 01.05.avi) ( the show bones season 1 ep 5) that is how I did it and my wife just digs this now.

Your number 1 question, do you have MP on one tv or networked and on mutiple tvs???

Scott :)

    Regarding 1:
-Isn't there a PIN option specifically for this somewhere (I think in Moving Pictures)?
-You can also do this using file structure with My Videos, just separate the directories and add them both to the configuration. You'll then have a choice of folders when you open it.

There are probably many, many ways to do this.

Moving Pictures 1.0 Beta supports customizable categories and parental controls. Moving Pictures 0.7.5 will be more stable but if you want to play with the cutting edge stuff (and help test while we work towards a stable release), 1.0 Beta would probably fulfill your requirements.

I feel really stupid because I can't get Mediaportal to work on my pc. Here are some basics: Pentium 4 3Ghz, 1gb ram, ATi video w/128mb ram and Windows 7 Home 32bit. I have a Hauppauge HVR-1250 connected to a cable box.

I tried to follow the basic setup instructions but did not see some of the screens that I should. For example, I could not run MPC Video Decoder. Here are the instructions that I followed:

    * Download the zip file to a safe location.
    * Create the following folder under your Program Files: C:\Program Files\MPCVideoDecoder.
    * From the zip file you downloaded extract MPCVideoDec.ax to C:\Program Files\MPCVideoDecoder.
    * From the Start menu select Run and type in the following command: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\MPCVideoDecoder\MPCVideoDec.ax". You should get a pop-up message telling you the filter/file was registered successfully.

This file will not register. Here's the error message that I got:
The module "C:|Program lies\MPCvideodecoder\MPCvideodec.ax" failed to load. Make sure the specified binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. The specified module could not be found

I've checked my typing for mistakes but it just won't run. Can someone walk me through it, please?

    Thanks, Bill

PS Should any newbie be able to run this program or is it really for techies?

I think you might have to run the command prompt as Administrator. If you right click on the command prompt in the start menu there is an option for 'Run as Administrator'. I had the same problem you are having.

Perasonally I would advise using the SAF4 codec pack (as I do). It saves a whole load of codec hasle and is very easy to set-up.
