For real.... We are talking about Microsoft here
Which just goes against your point. If it was any other software corporation, you might be right, but Microsoft makes their money from Windows and Office. If they charged for Internet Explorer, outside of Windows, they'd lose a good percentange of the market, which costs more (in the long run) than the $50 a license they'd make.

Besides, the open source revolution isn't going to stop. Have you seen Windows Defender? It's actually a very solid application, one that even Microsoft would have packaged a few years ago, but nowadays it is more important the Microsoft be seen giving away useful security apps (to strengthen their hold on Windows, etc) than it is to sell the product and make a bit of extra cash.

Back to the point, however: yes, it would be nice to see MediaPortal support another SQL option. I can only imagine the possibilities of MediaPortal being compatible with MySQL... So smooth.

But who said MS SQL Server is for free. MS is selling MS SQL Server but is also distributing a free small version with some limited functionality called MS SQL Server EXPRESS. Have in mind that the MP TVEngine is using the EXPRESS version which is free and it will stay free just like MS SQL 2000 Desktop engine was and is.

MS SQL Server Express might have some limitation over the Enterprise Versions of it but those are irrelevant for the MP TV Engine functionality (i.e. Clustering, unlimited concurrent connection, bigger db files)

MS still makes money from it even if its free, from web servers using it. A web server needs Windows OS to run so MS makes money from the OS that is required to install their MS SQL Express engine.

MP only runs with extra software installed. .NET framework in general, SQL server for the "TV-Server" etc.
Well many other 3rd party applications use .NET Framework. Even ATI Catalyst drivers require the installation of .NET Framework. A simple but very common example of it.

I don't like that I have to install aditional softwares to use another software... Some programs do not need any 3rd party soft and are so easy to use that you can even copy them on a stick, format your HDDs, reinstall windows and run them. Because there is no need to install them, all datas are located in the directory, no registry etc.
MS SQL is only intoduced for the new MP TVEngine and in future i belive it will be used also for the other dbs used in MP. imo its better that the current free SQLite db.
You can just copy and paste your MP directory on a new XP installation and it will work.

I want a htpc-software easy to handle like this software I mentioned above. I don't want to have "tons" of special software installed, there should be no services running when I don't use the PC as htpc,...
By installing .NET Framework (which you probably already installed for some other application) and MS SQL Express does it make it tons of applications?

I can't belive Media Portal uses the .net runtime. It makes me sick! It should be all VC++ MFC. NO WAIT! It should be all win32. And why use Direct X?? Wouldn't it have been better to write the graphics code from scratch? In fact whats the deal with Microsoft Windows???? I mean really couldn't the MP developers just write there code in asembler??? Even better! forget about PCs and standard intel/AMD CPUs I reccomend the MP development team design a fully custom hardware solution from the ground up!
