in 2.4 the sleep should not be enabled automatically. (unless you tell gmps to let windows do the away->sleep.
when your sleep mode is s3 (standby) the system should fall to sleep a few 10 seconds after you tell it to do so. it will first go to away mode, which is not 100% ideal, because in this ~20 seconds, you will bring it back to user mode just by moving your mouse or pressing any button.
when your sleep mode is s4 (hibernate) it should be imediately, because power-/sleep- buttons are mapped automatically.
