Can the penguin come and play? Every now and then this question pops up. Its the question of MP and Linux, but this has a new twist. In the past (https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/showthread.php?t=11652&highlight=linux) some very good points have been made as to why MP is best kept on a Microsoft OS. But with MPs new server client system, I think its relevant to ask the question again. The bulk of the reasons (as I understand it) for MP not being ported to Linux is the 'ease' with which MS enables multimedia display via DirectX. So I see no reason to shift the client/player to Linux, but what about the server? As this thread has already noted the server will not need to have a high spec. Would it be fair to say that the most hardware intensive part of the server software will be XP itself? Running a server on Linux (or any open source 'free' OS) should present savings to the user both from the OS licence and the hardware cost (just re-use old corp machines). As I understand it, the only issue (and its not a small one) with putting the server on Linux is the support for TV/Radio cards. If anyone is interested in this beyond simply putting the idea down, maybe we should start a new thread. Cheers for reading.
