Hi,

Is anyone running Media Portal on one of the bundles from mini-itx.com, e.g. mini-itx.com - store - home

I'm just wondering about noise from the Noah 3988 case...any opinions?

I'm looking for a really quiet machine to use as a client.
Thanks.

no room for a passive heatsync. that means you'll have to run a cpu fan with a low-profile h/s which will mean it will be noisy.

Guess it depends on how quiet you want it. CPU fan is what will make the most noise.

PSU also, but I cant advise you about silent external power supplies.

No PCI seems to me like a drawback - also can you use a pci-e card if you're not happy with on-board video? (dont know what video chipset you are looking at but there's a lengthy thread here about issues with 780g and MP - see 1080i)

First of all most of the mini-itx boards nowadays do have a PCI slot. But it's a hassle unless you're building for really small places e.g. cars etc.
For example why buy a board like the Jetway JNC81 and not a mini-atx that's built for speed and not for comfort? On the other hand if you're thinking about pico-nano then it's really a bad idea as you'd spend a lot of money for a board whose equivalent in mini-atx would cost less than 30$. Unless of course you want it for a car or a boat where consumption and size are of the essence

    I stand corrected.

    re Noah 3988 and PCI

"Drive Bays: Supports a slimline optical drive and either 1x 2.5in HDD or 1x 3.5in HDD. With a 3.5in drive fitted, PCI expansion is not possible."

    ...

"PCI: Right angled PCI Riser provided. Due to drive tray positioning a PCI card is only possible in combination with a 2.5in HDD."
