You're probably right, but it's difficult to alter when you are tied up by the design of the skin.
The only thing I could come up with right now, was using <colordiffuse> 60ffffff </ colordiffuse>

Nice, but I would probably drop the lines too. If you get the "right amount" of transparency, just text on top of FanArt will look great, like a minimalistic magazine layout. Also, keep in mind that bigger marginals around text makes everything look fancier. Attached is a Basic Home mockup I did a couple of weeks ago that only uses semi-transparent shapes only to improve text readability.
