Note: This is not a post about MKV files stuttering / playing slowly, but is to do with how long it takes for the files to start playing normally.

Hi,

I am having a problem with the time it is taking MKV files to start playing in MediaPortal. The files are on a network volume, connected via Gigabit Ethernet. The same files on the same machine take about 1 - 2 seconds to play in Windows Media Player, but take 30 - 50 seconds to play in MediaPortal using the built in player.

If I set Windows Media Player to be an external player for MediaPortal, it takes 30 - 50 seconds before WMP launches.

When it does play.. I can hear audio from the start of the file, but it is still showing the MediaPortal skin.

About 15 seconds later, it starts showing the video, but starts again from the beginning for the file (i.e I see video and hear the same audio I just heard)

Once playing, everything works well, unless I try to go back to the MediaPortal interface, which takes about 30 seconds to go from the playing video to the interface.

Looking at the attached logs.. things start going wrong at point: 2008-07-27 17:17:11.921702

Any ideas?

Tanks
Daniel Parker

Hi,

I am getting a little closer..

The directory that contains my movies has almost 500 objects in it.. and it is this that is causing the slowdown of playback.

If I put a movie file in a directory by itself, then playback is quick, and returning to the MediaPortal menu is quick.

As soon as I play a file in a directory with many objects it gets slow.

Can anyone else replicate this issue?

Any ideas for a fix?

Thanks
Daniel

If these are Movies\TV Shows they should be scanned by the relevant part of MP, then change your view to Title from Shares and things should speed up, as would then be read from database rather than rescanning your folder every time.

    Hi,

Changing to Title view from shares fixed the speed issue with opening directories, and returning to MediaPortal after the movie is finished, but it DOES NOT seam to have helped with the time it is taking for video to start playing.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks
    Daniel
