Movie grouping? (1 Viewer)

Hello,

I don't know whether this has been mentioned before, but I have some kind of feature in mind... Maybe it's possible to group films like Die Hard 1,2,3,4 in one entry. So there's just one entry called Die Hard or whatever and when u click that it shows u all four seperate entries.

Is this possible and could this be implemented?

Kind regards,
Zinu.

You could create one movie called Die hard and add all four disks. When you select Die Hard, a sub menu pops up showing more than one disc and you choose which one.

In order for this to be more elegant, the disk selection popup would need to be rewritten to display the disk name. Currently that popup is part of core media portal -- so the plugin would to need to create their own version.

It wouldn't even have to be that complicated. Something as simple as a fold-out-menu kind of thing would do. The only requirement is that it only shows 1 item which covers the other items.

I think you misunderstood me. It is that way today. The only thing lacking is knowing which disc you are playing.

Is this when there are more than two files assigned? Since I have loads of movies that have two discs but it just plays them in the given order, no submenu or anything.

The submenu only shows when the files are disk images. If the files are two AVIs it assumes it's two parts to the same movie. If it's two ISOs (or more) it assumes that the second or third disk is a bonus disk (perhaps with special features). So in this case it gives you the option to select what to play.

In 0.8 we will have a categories menu that is extremely flexible. With this you could add a special subfolder for a series of movies. I think this is not exactly what you are looking for though, as the grouped movies would not be in a list with other movies. the grouping would be on the menu system. If we have time, we'll squeeze this into 0.8 because I think with the existing filtering / menu system we are working on, what you're wanting would nto be too difficult to implement. But it's going to depend on how much time we have. If it doesn't get in it will have to wiat until 0.9.

This was implemented via a patch to 0.7.0 a while ago by user johnloon called movieboxes (see thread https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/moving-pictures-284/group-series-movies-together-49819/). I thought this was a pretty good implementation of a separate "Group By" function in moving pictures, however it does not patch into the current codebase cleanly so it no longer works with the latest SVN. I think this was on the right track for the ideal situation, to supply a mechanism by which 1 or more movies can be grouped under a user defined "collection", independent of the currently applied filter. So for example let's say you have all James Bond movies, you define a collection called "James Bond Collection" and assign all the james bond movies to this. In the GUI you can filter by genre "Action" and as a result you see:

    ...
    Italian Job
    James Bond Collection
    King Kong
    Kingdom of Heaven
    ...

The single entry James Bond Collection appears because at least one of it's members applies to the current filter (Action). Drilling down to James Bond Collection then should display (assuming current sort is Title):

    A View To A Kill
    Casino Royal
    Diamonds Are Forever
    Die Another Day
    etc...

So now you change the filter to be movies released in 2006, now the GUI would still show the James Bond Collection because one or more members fit's the current filter, however drilling down now would have a single entry:

    Casino Royale

In the event no members of the collection fit the current filter then the Collection entry should not appear in the list. I hope this makes sense :) This could be later expanded to generate "fanart" that is a composite or mosaic of all of the member's coverart but for now a default collection coverart and fanart would be sufficient. This would be soooooooo helpful to us that have 1,000+ movies in our collection.

Th reason that patch was not integrated was because it largely overlapped and was not compatible with our larger filtering/menu system that we have on the way for 0.8. We will definitely be implementing this request though, so do not worry.

    Hehe, I missed something I see :)

Great to hear this will be implemented. Do I have to create a feature request over at Google Code or will that not be necessary?
