Still can't get this to work. If the client is not set to create thumbs, is there no chance of this ever working?

on closer inspection, I see that there is a section in the local videodatabasev5.db3 file that has a table called videothumblist. I'm guessing then that this needs to be populated for anything to appear

I get the _s suffix on some of mine too, but only on specific video files. It creates a thumbnail for each video, but each image is 0 bytes in size and has _s.jpg on the end. Oddly though "new" videos that are added are thumbnailed normally. Out of around 50 folders only 3, and always the same 3, show this behaviour, along with some apparently random individual files. Actually I think I may have found a clue now , viewing VideoDatabaseV5.db3 in SQLlit database browser and table VideoThumbBList, every video item in this table has the thumbnail problem. Just need to make sense of it now!
