Movies in MP are " brighter" than in Media player (1 Viewer)

Movies in MP will always display brighter than in the standalone mediaplayer, ie the blacks aren't black but dark grey. I have been experimenting with ffmpeg settings, but the result is not what I want; if I make the picture darker in the filter, than in a normal mediaplayer it will be too dark. What settings should I change to get the exact same picture as in Media Player (classic) ???

Another solution might be a control in MP to adjust brightness, is there perhaps a plugin for this?

Basically you can fix this by using ffdshow and in the levels filter enter min input value as 16, and max as 235. FFdshow will then adjust your video image so the colors get correct for a PC. Tick the "full range" box.

Also changing brightness in your videocard config can help.

Thanks. But is it possible to apply the filter only for MP? I'm afraid if I change this in ffdshow, it will mess up the colors in all the other players?
Anyway, I'll try this as I have a dedicated media center and normally I only run MP (except for a couple of games my kids play now and then).

It also depend from the video card you own and whether you do hardware acceleration or not.

If you use an ATI card, ATI expands to PC levels HD movies decoded in hardware automatically. This is not true for SD content, you have use a registry tweak to do this and have a consistent tuning of the TV.

For content that is not HW accelerated (xvid for instance) the best thing to do is use ffdshow as described above.
