I am still unable to get MP watchdog to write a file using Option 1, report a bug.

Perhaps there is a gap in your understanding of how to use option 1 (and 2).
Unlike option 3 - which exports a set of log files immediately - option 1 starts MediaPortal in debug mode so you can reproduce the problem. Once you've reproduced the problem, close MP, and then the Watchdog will create the normal zip file.

...but in any case, in my opinion updating/fixing the LAV codec installation should be your first priority. If you can get them working properly, MP should use them instead of whatever other dodgy codec it's currently falling back on, and avoiding the dodgy codec should avoid the crash.
