hm, is 50Hz worse than 60Hz? It's hard to comprehend for me

I think it all comes down to what you're watching. If you're watching 50hz material then 25/50hz is best, if you're watching 60 hz material then 30/60hz is best. If you're watching 50hz on 30/60hz and vise versa you get non-smooth playback.

ok, how can I recognize, how much Hz a movie has?
I checked the sampling rate of some movies with VLC - it's alway 48000Hz
    thanks in advance!

That's the audio rate, you want to look at the frames per second (fps) of the video stream. Content produced for PAL systems (TV shows broadcast in Europe, Australia, etc.) will generally be close to 25fps (fits nicely into 50hz). NTSC (TV in the US, mostly) will usually be about 30fps. Film (most movies) is generally around 24fps.

Generally, this will only be an issue for interlaced video, and modern displays will often do a good job of handling frame rates that don't quite fit into the screen refresh rate. But if you get tearing or nasty flicker, try changing to a different refresh rate.

i can confirm what vvultutre described. Have a similar setup (Catalyst 8.10, XP32SP3, latest weekly SVN build).

When using VMR9, the screen turns black for about 2 seconds and the refresh rate changes to 60 Hz. I help myself by using a shortcut that switches it back to 50 Hz. This results in another 2 seconds of black screen and stopping TV. But when turning TV on again it stays at 50 Hz.

I twiddled a lot with all the Catalyst settings, but nothing seems to help. Is it possible that some usage of VMR in Mediaportal is not completely correct?

BTW: I finally managed to get EVR running, but with this one I get horizontal stripes.

    CU,
    Sepp.

Thanks for the heads up Sepp... What do you mean by "shortcut that switches back to 50Hz " ? How does it work ?

    cheers

This happens to me as well. Set a custom resolution (48Hz). When I start playback in MP refreshrate changes to 60Hz. Quit playing and it goes back to 48Hz. If you use powerstrip this will not happen, but why should I need to run a seperate program just to set a 48Hz refresh when nvidia drivers can do it just fine..

    Graphics Card: GeForce 7200GS - 169.04 forceware
    believe I have this SVN: MediaPortal SVN-Snapshot:-10-26-2008 10-40h - Revision:20602.rar
but the same thing happend with MP RC3 + ATI HD3450

EViS: Okay I tried that still switching to 60Hz though, but after playback it switches to 48Hz if played file was 24fps and 50Hz if played file was 25fps.

Perhaps a daft question, but how do you know it's @ 60 Hz when playing a video?
