Hi Ray.

What do you mean by preview / change channels on the server? The server and client are all on the one computer. The server looks to be only the "settings" - the only place i can view tv is through the client. Or is there some other functionality ive not discovered?

Please do the following if you havn't already:

Right-click on MediaPortal shortcut, click Properties.
Click on the Compatibility tab.
Enable "Run this program as an administrator"
Click OK.
Do the same for the TV-Server Configuration shortcut.

The tvserver_TsWriter log shows several errors with the timeshift buffer. Somehow the files in the buffer are locked and MP is trying to overwrite them. These could be old files that were left behind from the last time you had watched Tv.

In the properties/compatibility menu I am unable to select the "run as admin" check box as its greyed out. I can however select run as administrator from properties/shortcut/advanced - is that ok? I have now done this on Media portal, Media portal configuration and TV server configuration desktop shortcuts. Would you like me to now generate another log when it crashes and post it up here?

Also i note there is a "compatibility" mode in properties/compatibility - should i have this set? At present its not.

I also tried watching a recorded TV program in windows media player. Although it can play this .TS file, its a bit jerky in some places and the motion in shots with movement or where the camera has panned look awful. The same file doesnt have these artifacts when played through media portal.

If you open TVServer config\Channels, there is a preview button, select channel, and then press preview and see if at any point it crashes if left running.

Just tried that and preview doesnt do anything. I can see the button but it does nothing when clicked.

Yes - i did that. I selected one of the chanels in the table above, and when selected it highlights that line in blue. Then i click "preview" and the only thing that happens is it de-selects the channel i previouslly selected.

Those should be the drivers to use, have you scanned both tuners ?, have you disabled any tuners not being used, when you set your recording folder up, did you change ALL available tuners to new location (drop down box to select tuner), preferable with a seperate timeshifting folder (even if its inside the recording folder).

Only other thing, although i rate the M$ codec for mpeg2, Cyberlink is better, any chance of installing either PowerDVD7\8 (does not matter if trial version, you can still use codecs)
I am also using FFDShow (Vista Codec Pack) for Audio, with EVR for renderer (expert mode top right of MP config\directshow filter control\renderer).

If you run filmerit (link in signature) does it show any filter errors, if it does use padlock to unlock repair mode and fix errors.

If erverything is working fine, you should be able to watch unscrambled channels in preview.

With Vista besides any already supplied codec from M$, can whole heartedly recommend the Vista codec pack, as this makes all the main file types integrate and work with both Windows media player and MCE, and the golden rule is, if it works in windows it should work fine for Mediaportal :)

Sorry if above seem's a bit of a wide rangeing answer, but if you do not have the basics right, then there's not much chance of MP being stable.

Thanks - thats a lot of suggestions!

I have just played with my screen resolution and font size and now i can preview TV in TV server. I will leave it going for a bit today to see if it crashes.

Now - working through your list:
    1) Yes I think i scanned both cards. It was a long time ago that i set MP up so i cant remember. To be bure i have just scanned both again in the tv server config. Both looked like they were set to the wrong satellite (which they cant have really been as i was getting TV no problem) however i have set these back to Optus D1 which is what they should be.
    2) No i had not disabled un-used tuners, but have now done so.
    3) I cant recall what i set up when i set the recording folder up - and i cant seem to find anywhere to set individual recording folders and timeshift folders for each tuner card in either MP config or TV server config. Where should this be done?
    4) I will look into getting a demo of Power DVD7/8
    5) EVR now set as renderer.
    6) have just run Filmerit and it found 14 errors. I tried to fix these with the magic button however i get endless "confirm delete of such and such" - i had to force the app to quit as it seemed to just go around in circles.

I have noted that since re-scanning for channels that things seem very slow in media portal. Changing channel takes a LOT longer than it did before, and some channels just give me a black screen now?

The check box is greyed out because you are not logged in as an administrator. Yes, you can enable it in the properties/shortcut/advanced but you will need to enter an administrator password. This will be the same password you used when you (or someone else) first installed Vista. Do you have an account that has administrator privileges?

Please follow Ray's advice and send us your logs.
