Does MP playback TV at 1080P when I have set my desktop to 1280x720

Just recently moved from VMC to Media Portal and am still feeling my way around - love it so far, blows the socks off VMC. I have a fairly high end HTPC connected to a 50" 1080p plasma but also use it to browse the web and check email so have reduced the desktop resolution to 1280x720.

In VMC I was able to set the media center to 1080P and keep the lower resolution on the desktop - I have played around with MP but cannot find the same setting and think I can see a difference when I set the desktop to 1920x1080. Can anybody shed some light on this, would hate to think that I am degrading my TV to 720p.

I do suspect and hope that the TV engine displays at the native resolution of the TV.

    Cheers,
    Rory

If you have set windows to 1280*720 then launched MediaPortal, then MediaPortal will run at that resolution. MediaPortal does not change your resolution on launch.

So you either need to change the resolution back to 1920*1080 before loading MP, or write a script that changes the resolution and then launches MP or something similar.

Thanks, I'll give this a bash - only problem I foresee is exiting MP if there is a current recording taking place but in general this probably gives me a good work around.

If you use the latest versions of MP (the ones with a TVServer) then you can exit the MP Client as the TVServer runs in the background as a server (and thus records whether the client is running or not).

OK, I'm using MP1.0 RC2 with TV server so this should do the trick nicely. I'll try it out tonight once I get access after the wife has finished watching the various soaps.

    Cheers...

I'm running a similar system (1330x768 desktop to a 60" LED DLP) and the TV recordings seem to be played back at native (1080) resolution. I've made several recordings both in MP and on the Directv HR20 DVR of the same OTA HD broadcast and the playback quality is virtually identical. Using Hauppauge WinTV 1800 and 2250 tuners in MP and can record 3 broacasts at the same time without burning up the HTPC!
I tried recording with the desktop resolution set to 1920x1080 and there seemed to be no difference in the playback quality. Using the Cyberlink 8 codecs.

what you describe seems to be the opposite. You have 1080p being shrunk to 1330x768, whereas the original poster has 1280*720 being stretched to 1080p.

The recordings are not affected by the desktop resolution. They are saved in whatever resolution they are sent in. They then get scaled to fit the resolution of the display device (TV) when they are played.

Actually, from my reading, we are both describing a lower resolution desktop for readability and whether it affects TV recording native output resolution.
And from my limited experience I agree completely with your statement that playback resolution is unaffected by desktop resolution.
