what you describe seems to be the opposite. You have 1080p being shrunk to 1330x768, whereas the original poster has 1280*720 being stretched to 1080p.

The recordings are not affected by the desktop resolution. They are saved in whatever resolution they are sent in. They then get scaled to fit the resolution of the display device (TV) when they are played.

Actually, from my reading, we are both describing a lower resolution desktop for readability and whether it affects TV recording native output resolution.
And from my limited experience I agree completely with your statement that playback resolution is unaffected by desktop resolution.

Played around a bit more last night and have come to the same conclusion - the desktop resolution seems to have little affect on playback (live or recorded). Although, when I set the desktop to 1080p I think MP reduces the GUI resolution to 720p. I think this because when I exit MP to the desktop it is at a lower resolution for a couple of seconds then resets to 1920x1080...

Would be nice if a dev could confirm how this works wrt playback res vs the GUI res vs the Desktop res.

It was... but this was based on an understanding that with a desktop resolution of 1280x720 that MP TV playback (live or recorded) was at 720p despite the fact that I have a 1080p TV. My current thinking now is that the MP GUI seems to have a max resolution somewhere around 1280x768 (if you set your desktop lower it will probably match it) but the TV playback is displayed at the received resolution and as you say scaled to the TV native resolution (in my case 1080p). If this is indeed the case then I see no benefit to changing the resolution up to 1920x1080 when I launch MP - or do I have it completely wrong.

Basically - if you try and show 720p on a 1080p screen then the 720p image is stretched by the computers graphics card.

Assuming a 720p resolution is set:

Any video being shown will be scaled to 720p (as this is what the PC resolution is), so thats one resize, and then the graphics card will scale that to 1080p, so a second resize.

so, say you are watching 1080p video. It will be resized to 720p (thus losing detail), and then when shown on the TV it will be stretched to 1080p. losing detail again, as its stretching the 720p image it scaled earlier.

    ...im confusing myself!!

Basically - setting the resolution to match that of the TV is best!

    Hi there,

Might sound stupid but the way I work around this constrain would be to a Dual display setup, one via HDMI on the plasma and then the VGA connected the Plasma as well toggeling with the plasma remote between the 2 inputs leaviing both running...

This doesn't make it automatic as well which might no be what you are looking for.
