Hello all,

I'm trying to install MediaPortal 1.5 to my little home server as a TV tuner server. I'm running into some problems to get the server up and running and I believe it might be caused by the windows version i'm using.

Here's my humble setup:

IBM T43 (Intel 2Ghz / 2GB RAM / 60GB HD)
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x86 (cannot install x64 on that box due to CPU limitation)
DIAMOND ATI Theater™ HD 750 USB TV Tuner

So the drivers for the tuner install correctly and I installed the DBA files found here. I installed SQL 2005 and Desktop experience already (so WMP 11) and are known to be functional.

I start the setup as standalone server and after installing all necessary files, it completes (I do get a long socket error message but that disappears after a reboot). However, when I run the TV config for the first time, the process launches, uses 90% of the machine resources but nothing happens....

So i'm thinking it might be the DBA files which are made for 2008 R2 which is x64 and based on win7 because all the rest seems to be functional. I cannot find any version of the DBA files for a 2008 x86 distribution (based on Vista) to confirm my sayings... Would anyone know where to find that or have anything else to propose?

Thanks,

I've uninstalled everything for now (MP, SQL, DBA, drivers, etc) and forgot to save the logs.... sorry
Also, this hardware setup is to recycle an old laptop and runs other services for my LAN (DNS, DHCP, AD, Gateway, radius, etc) so im not investing time or money to upgrade anything just to run MP!

    Hello and welcome JulioQc :)

Without logs it is difficult to assist you... and I guess you know that we don't provide support for server versions of Windows. Based on various threads in our forum we know that MP can work, but there may be extra hoops to jump through.

The same person who posted your BDA patch seems to have posted this thread:
    http://www.win2008workstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=513

...in which x86 is mentioned in the changelog. Since the thread you linked is newer, my guess is that the patch supports x86... but I can't be sure.

You say the tuner drivers install correctly. Have you tested that the tuner works in other software?

    Thanks for the reply!

The tuner works as i've been using it on my laptop for a while now (Win7 x64) on 2-3 different sofware.
As of the DBA support, I extracted the msi file to find both x64 and x86 files so that pretty much answers my question.

I'm re-installing step by step everything as I write this and will hopefully have logs to provide shortly :)

    Thanks :)

You've clearly got BDA errors going on there.

This basically means that TV Server is not able to detect tuners. The cause is that a standard BDA component (the ATSC tuning space) is not registered.

Did you run the BDA patch installer with admin privileges?

I suggest you try reinstalling the BDA patch and then restarting the PC.

Yes it was installed with admin rights and the TVService has a hook with one of the files. So maybe the install partially worked... Since its a homebrew app made 4 years ago, it could be problematic... I have one last idea before I give up entirely

Like I said before (and I think you misunderstood): have you tried the tuner in other software (on that PC)?
If you can get it working in other software then it should work in MP.

hehe ya I fully realized the misunderstanding afterwards :) (the answer is no!)

However, I got rid of the DBA errors in the log by getting the files from a Vista x86 VM is installed using a script made for that purpose online! After launching MP config, I dont see my tuner listed so that could be an issue as well (since ATI cards are of an unknown functionality...). Ill try with a 3rd party TV tuner software and see if that works :)

Sounds like you're making progress... :)
Your tuner should be listed in TV Server configuration, not MP configuration.
I'm not sure what you mean by "ATI cards are of an unknown functionality...".
