Just upgraded 1.7.1. hotfix to 1.8.0. final and now I can't start MP (nothing happens when I double click the icon, simple as that). I can't start configuration tool, extension manager or the StreamedMP tool either. Same thing. I'm on windows 8.0 and have done all the latest windows updates as of today.

Maybe the problem is now that you have an empty/0kB MediaPortal.xml file.
Please try to delete the c:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\MediaPortal.xml file. Note I said ProgramData, not Program Files. You may have to copy+paste c:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal into the address bar in Windows Explorer, because that is a hidden folder.
