Description
Hi,

I am unable to view subtitles in shows recorded by Windows Media Center (WMC) in WTV format. When I watch these shows in WMC, the subtitles appear. However, when I tried to watch them in MP2, no subtitles are shown for the same videos.

I do have "ATSC Closed Captions" enabled under "Settings > players > video player > Subtitles". I can view subtitles in shows recorded by MP2 in TS format but not in shows recorded by WMC in WTV format.

I found the following 2 threads which seem to indicate that subtitles are supported in WTV files:
I made a couple of small recordings from WMC to verify that subtitles can be viewed in WMC in a newly recorded show, but are not available in MP2. These recordings were made from an OTA ATSC TV tuner card and a HDHomeRun Prime TV tuner with a CableCard.
  • College Basketball_KIROH_2020_01_05_12_12_20.wtv (recorded by OTA Tuner)
  • Ghostbusters_FXHD_2020_01_05_12_20_30.wtv (recorded by CableCard Tuner)
I'm attaching these video clips along with the logs from MP2.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Record show using WMC
2. Verify that subtitles can be viewed when played by WMC
3. Copy recorded WTV file to MP2 media source folder
4. Verify that Subtitles are enabled in MP2 settings
5. Play newly added show in MP2 client
6. No subtitles are shown during MP2 client playback

@aspik, I looked at the Ghostbusters and indeed no subtitles seem to be present.

I'm not sure if we support subtitles for wtv files. I checked both files with MediaInfo and there is no metadata available because they currently don't support the wtv format at all.

I checked the samples in MPC-HC and no subtitles were displayed. PotPlayer was able to display the subtitles.

Here's the relevant thread where wtv support was added:
[Finished] - Add MCE recording support to MP2 (.wtv + .dvr-ms)

@morpheus_xx do we support subtitles for wtv recordings?

Good question. I think during playback it all depends on the source splitter if it offers the stream information correclty via IAMStreamSelect interface. If the stream is there listed, it need to has a supporterd media type which a decoder can connect to.

I can check the example files at home, no idea how the directshow graph looks like

@rback, it turns out to be a limitation of the LAV codecs.

There is little chance that the LAV author adds this functionality for wtv files. What you could try is to use alternative splitters. Maybe the Haali Mediasplitter does the job, but as far as Team MediaPortal is concerned ther is nothing that we can do about it.
