I tried searching, but I don't know what to search for.
I finally got around to trying out the music portion of Media Portal.
The problem I'm having is that the sound is 'watery' & staticy. I've tried different settings like using the BASS engine, fade-in/out on & off, changing from the Realtek to the default sound device, but there is no change. Videos & recorded TV sound fine. Is there something I'm missing?

    Hmm, no idea so far.
Normally using BASS you've great sound.
Never heard of any problems with it.

Problem is that i don't have any idea, what this might cause.

Do you experience it also on analog output or only through spdif (optical)? If you put earphones directly in the pc, do you hear the same "watery" effect?

Assuming you are playing lossy material (mp3 etc), I would check the quality of your music files. Badly ripped and/or encoded music files do sound watery. I generally use EAC to rip my music, and LAME with the '-V2' switch to encode it. I find it a good compromise between quality and file size.

I know it's not the mp3s themselves. I rip at vbr minimum 192 max 320 & they sound fine over a networked xbox with XBMC.
I'll try the analogue outputs & see if that changes anything.

I had a problem like this and found out that it turned out to be my sound card drivers (Philips Ultimate Force) i uninstalled and reinstalled it and got perfect sound back using the Bass player in MP, this may help you it's worth a try anyway.
