Recording in ts means it will be recording everything, not just the picture and audio, you get things like subtitles and any interactive data.

I assume that you are referring to DVB channels?

If so, the .ts records the whole transport stream from the selected channel. It is my understanding that if that channel contains several different program streams, then the .ts file will be larger by the amount of program streams within the transport stream. For example, if the transport stream contains 3 different programs, then the .ts file will be 3 times larger than if you had just recorded the program you wanted as a single .mpg file. And, if any of those channels are high definition, the .ts file will be even larger.

My advice is that, unless you particularly want to record all the programs within a transport stream, then stick with recording just the program you want as a single .mpg file.

However, there is a bug at the moment (Mantus 1099) where .mpg files from DVB-T programs are recoded corrupted ... :(

When using .ts as recording format, no additional channels are recorded. So the the actual difference between file sizes of .mpeg and .ts is only a really small one.

The traditional definition of "transport stream" is as I described above - but it sounds like MediaPortal has adopted a different definition?

So, if the .ts file contains the same program information as the .mpg file, then what is the point or benefit of recording in .ts format?

    - .ts files can contain additional PIDs to mpeg files (i.e. teletext and subtitles)
    - TVE3 is recording wanted PIDs from the whole transport stream, so the .ts file data format is excatly the same it would be saving the those transport stream and not the single channel from it.

I.e. the .ts files contain same 188 byte packets as in the broadcasted transport stream, but not all of them. For MPEG2 files the transport stream must be processed as it needs to be stored as PES and not in TS format.
