ok guys,

The situation I would think is not all that uncommon. I have a LCD in my living room which currently has a mediaportal machine hooked to it and it does just about everything for me. Its set up with webepg, movies, tv episodes, hdtv recording, etc, etc

I am looking at solutions to take this data and stream it to my plasma in my bedroom. One option I am looking at is a separate mediaportal machine. So now for the questions:

For the purposes of these questions lets call the bedroom the remote unit and the living area the current unit.

1) Can the remote unit access the tv card on the current unit to watch tv and set recordings?
2) Can the remote unit watch tv that has been recorded on the current unit?
3) Can the database for videos, tv episodes, music on the current unit be accessed by the remote unit. ie. already specified imdb info, watched flags, etc, etc
4) Using a draft-n wifi network, would streaming be ok?
5) Would mediaportal HAVE to be running on the current unit for the remote unit to access its facilities (or just the server components)?

Thx in advance guys :)

    Hi Wizard_TPG,

Ok, here's some quick answers for you.
    1) Yes,
    2) Yes although you may need to map the local recordings folder in the 'My Videos' settings and view the recordings via 'My Videos'. It *may* ideally also work seamlessly via "My Recordings" but I haven't tried.
    3) I haven't tried.
    4) I use 802.11g with crappy reception so 802.11n should be excellent :)
    5) No, you only need the Mediaportal client (interface) running to view stuff on the local PC, not on the remote PC.

    Hope this helps,

    I agree
    1 yes
    2 yes
3 yes I never checked to see if it showed what has/hasn't been watched
    4 Never tried
5 No you just need the server running

You need to install the TV sever plugin on your new client machie, this uses the servers database/streams/etc
PS the client needs to be powerfull if you want to run HD

    My setup is as follows

Server in garage has TV Server Installed ONLY with 2 DVB-T cards and Big_Kevs WEB Guide - This is on 24x7 as it does other stuff as well (email and other web stuff). TV Server can use power scheduler to turn on when recordings are required, but if a client needs to watch TV using its cards and it is turned off, the clients won't work for TV.

    MP Client in Lounge room
    MP Client in Back room
    MP client's in 2 bedrooms (1 wireless)
All clients can schedule and watch recordings, even simulatenously from My Tv menus
All clients use 1 Database (see UserGuides/CentralisedDatabases - MediaPortal Wiki Documentation in wiki for central database).
wireless client must have a link speed higher the 10MB for FTA HD TV. (approx 13Mb/s)

NOTE, if you have an under spec'd machine, you could look at MP TV CLient which uses VLC to connect to the TVServer. There is no MP Client loaded at all.
