I am using MediaPortal (just went from 1.4 to 1.5) on a desktop running Windows Server 2008 r2. I recognize that this is not a 'supported OS', but it has worked fairly well for me. I have a large collection of movies on a pair of external 2TB drives.

My wife wanted me to show her how to use this system, so that she could watch movies while I am not here.

I found that it will not work for her, although it works fine for me.

Her user is an administrator, and I installed the update from 1.4 to 1.5 while logged in as her. The program runs fine, and lists my movies, but tells me there are no codecs to play them. Any of them.

I started to examine the codec problem, but also noticed another problem: when updating movie information from IMDB, the program tells me there is no IMDB information for the movie. Any movie. I did verify that she has internet access while on my desktop.

I logged out as her, and logged in as me. Everything works just as it has. Movies play, and I can update information on movies, from IMDB, no problem.

This second issue made me think that there is a simple communication problem between MediaPortal and the rest of the system.

Can anyone shed any light on this?
