Could a new database table be created that would allow an outlook style viewing of family appointments/schedules? It could then post/display on the screen "pickup the kids" at the time/day from in teh database.

I have done exactly that. You can now set a message when creating an alarm. When the alarm goes off a popup comes up from the bottom of the screen (similar to how the topbar animation) and displays the message.
I have a button to close the popup as well.
My idea was to have it displayed over video etc. only when the user sets an option in the my alarm plugin but it seems Fullscreen video , dvd etc doesn't allow overlay from non OSD overlays? I played with it a bit but it wasn't working for me but in all other contexts it works fine.
