Firewall may be a problem, have had mine not auto detect a request to allow a program through a few times now.

Does not sound good about the sql giving a problem, resolve that first.

the cause is probably the missing screen from the wiki where you have to choose that youre account is actually an admin in SQL .. see my comments on https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/website-forum-wiki-feedback-58/install-sql-server-wiki-missing-screenshot-37219/

Nope I didn't check that box, and read your comments after I had installed - doohh! But I can enter the config and MP has found the server.
What are the chances of me being able to correct this problem now, do I have to re-install SQL server?

Did manage to find drivers for my card and could set up the TV server, but after trying to update I have completely stuffed it up and Vista now tells me there is no driver for 1 part (typical). Have noticed that the TVserver config takes forever to load now, I am presuming this is because my capture card drivers are throwing a hissy fit. Not worried though as I am hoping to rebuild my existing HTPC which has a Hauppage Nova-S Plus card that I have drivers for :)

Sorry limpwhizkid I should have looked before asking. Just went into the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and selected "Add New Administrator".

You know you have SP1 on your vista, did you do this from a new installation or just update.

Only asking because of the problems i and others had listed here.

    Now everything hunky dorey

SP1 from windows update, must admit it did fix my audio problem (reduced to stereo only and lost sound after sleep, had to reboot to regain audio) should send M$ bill for cheap 5.1 card I had to buy that also forced me to authenticate my copy of Vista (and this was after copying entire partion onto new hard drive and Vista not even blinking an eye) From what I have gone through and actual usability for a HTPC I think XP is far better. The old crappy machine I have running in the lounge will not run Vista, not near enough grunt, but more importantly nobody would know, as it's running MP 24/7.
