My Videos - how do you do it? (1 Viewer)

I have been using Media-Portal for some time now for music, and have only recently set it up on my new HTPC. I am now making the move into storing my (100% licensed and legitimate) DVD collection on the system, so I can select them from a library.

From what I can see, there are a variety of options – I can rip them to MPEG or AVI if I don’t mind the compression and loss of DVD menu structure, or I can use DIV X format. I can also maintain the DVD structure, which is my preferred choice, as I want to keep the language options, subtitles and DVD ‘extras’ that come with each film. I am therefore keeping them in .vob format once I have backed them up so that the entire menu structure and extra features of each DVD are maintained, but when it comes to the scan part, where it updates the information with actors, cover-art and story-line, it feels a little cumbersome, and I am not sure where I am going wrong.

Each DVD I backup has two folders, the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. The AUDIO_TS is always empty, so I am deleting that, and renaming the VIDEO_TS to the title of the film. I am going to check why the AUDIO_TS is empty, and make sure this is not an oversight on my part during the backup process, as I don’t want to find I am missing out the audio options. I have checked playback, and audio is there, but on Howard’s End, for example, there are two DVD options for either Dolby stereo, or Dolby 5.1 Stereo, and on my test-PC I cannot tell if the 5.1 option is working after backup – anyone got any thoughts on this?

Via Media-Portal configuration, I am scanning the directory where I store the films, and it then searches through IMDB for covers, film information, actors etc. This takes quite a while, and usually needs some manual intervention where I tell it specifically what film it should be looking for. Having checked back in the C:\Program Files\Team-Media-Portal\Videos\Thumbs (I think that's it) directory, I usually see a whole load of JPEGS that bear no relation to the films I have, which is strange.

The end result is that in Media Portal I can see a directory with the cover-art and title of the film, which I can right-click on and choose 'Add to Playlist', which then kicks off the movie - this is more 'wife proof' (the main success criteria needed if this is to replace the multitude of other boxes under the TV) than going into the directory, and selecting one of the many files within, and hoping it is the right one.

If anyone can share how their experiences with backing up DVD's, I would be very interested to learn a better way of doing it, as I am only on DVD 8 of my collection of 120+ at the moment! While we cannot discuss the actual topic of backup and ripping itself here, I think we are allowed to discuss what format we keep our video files in? I am particularly interested in how people arrange their file structures to speed the scanning process from IMDB, and the best way to get the DVD cover-art showing.

Many thanks in advance, :D

When backing your video up to the HDD, create a folder with you movie name and then place The Video_TS folder under that. Do not rename the video_ts folder.

Since you are scanning the movie fodlers, this adds it to the databases, so in MediaPortal, go to My Videos, and switch view to title/genre/actor/year. These views access the databases

The Shares view, access the folders direct and does not use the databases entries at all.

As for the Audio_TS folder, My 150+ DVD backups, have never had anything it so they can be deleted if you like. Always pays to check contents before deleting though.

Also, you can update the database without leaving MediaPortal by switching to the Shares view, select the movie folder you wish to add and either push F3 on keyboard or right click and select IMDB. I think you can even run scan from MP as well with the right click.

you could also have a look at this tips & trick entry on the wiki. UserGuides/CentralisedDatabases - MediaPortal Wiki Documentation
so down the track when looking at multiple clients it won't be such a pain if the DB has been setup incorrectly in the first place.

I personally use UNC connections for my shares even if on the same box for future proofing my setup.

Charli181 - I can't thank you enough for that information, it has worked a treat. I have a few issues with the IMDB still forcing me to take the wrong art work, but I will have a go on my test rig with editing the database to update this with the correct art.

    Very useful - thanks!

would backup to *.iso, with them mounted using daemon tools integration achieve the same for a neat file structure?

I started with a lot of .iso files and using deamon tools. Although this does work, it sometimes gave me problems and also takes some extra time when starting the movie, since it needs to be mounted first. I decided to ditch using iso's and store the video_ts folders instead. This always works.

The audio_ts folder is only used for DVDA disks (DVD-audio, this is sort of the predecessor of SACD.). These folders usually contain high definition (192kbps/24bit) multichannel (5.1) audio. Unfortunately there are very few DVDA disks available. Some of the good ones are Queen-A night At The Opera and Pink Floyd-Dark Side Of The Moon. For movies the audio_ts folder will be empty and you can discard it.

I've only JUST started with MediaPortal and I don't think I'll ever bother putting my collection of (*)DVDs onto it but this is too neat - I have GOT to try this out.

You people are just amazing (and I speak as a developer of 20+ years).

(*) and you wouldn't believe how many I've just watched and sold on too.

Is it possible to get the scan the database and get the IMDB data (folder.jpg, etc) for iso backups?
I have tried and so far I can't get it to work.

    it works
    synthdood didn't like responsiveness
it's not too bad for me, i've a vista machine reading iso over network on a nas
slight delay at front end, but same delay as with other back-ups i've prepared
i just have an aversion to vobs, iso feels neater
i've not done database scan, i use folder.jpg dumped in folder for each movie and that looks pretty for me
i don't choose by genre or actor etc. - each to their own
